Rangers and Hibs both got their seasons off to winning starts last weekend. Games between these two are often fiery so there should be plenty of entertainment at Ibrox on Sunday.

Rangers Preview – Are Rangers set for another win to end impressive week of results?

There may have been some dissenting voices after Sunday’s last gasp winner away to Kilmarnock but it was three points for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers. Considering they were away to a team who they failed to beat in the league last season that’s not to be dismissed lightly. Having been pegged back by their opponents late on it appeared that it would be more dropped points. However, Conor Goldson’s late winner ensured a winning start to the campaign. It was not the prettiest of games or the best performance, as is so often the case at Rugby Park. But it did indicate that there may be more resolve to this Rangers team compared to last season.

Gerrard’s men followed that up with a much more impressive display in their 4-2 win in Denmark away to Midtjylland. They now look very well set to qualify for the Europa League playoff where they would face Legia Warsaw for a place in the group stage. More importantly at this early stage of the season it was a performance which will instil confidence and belief. Alfredo Morelos was at the heart of most things good but new signings such as Jordan Jones and Joe Aribo also contributed. They will be looking to back that up on Sunday in their first league appearance at Ibrox.

Hibernian Preview – Can Hibs improve on last week’s performance and be more clinical at Ibrox?

When you look at the league table and see three points next to Hibs then it’s mission achieved in terms of their first game. A win and doing so by keeping a clean sheet is to be commended for any team. For manager Paul Heckingbottom it will be a mixture of relief, satisfaction but also a touch of disappointment. He will be relieved that it was a winning start and avoiding any slip-ups at home to a team expected to be battling against relegation. Satisfied with not conceding and also that it was Scott Allan – a big summer arrival – who got the winning goal. But also disappointed that it was not a more impressive performance and bigger winning margin.

He knows that his team will have to perform better if they are to take points off Rangers away from home. Defensively they look a work in progress, as is to be expected with a couple of new faces in the back four. There’s no doubt they have technical players capable hurting their opponents. But what is most definitely required is for them to be more clinical in attack. Far too many chances were wasted last week and they need to be ruthless.

Key-Facts – Rangers v Hibernian

  • Rangers have earned to big wins already this week – away to Kilmarnock in the league and against Midtjylland in the Europa League
  • Hibs got their league campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 win away to St Mirren but the performance was not overly impressive
  • All four of the meetings between these two clubs ended with two or fewer goals being scored in them last season

Rangers v Hibernian Betting Advice

These two clubs have built up something of a rivalry since the infamous Scottish Cup final in 2016. It means these matches always have an edge and there’s rarely more than a goal between them. It could well be that this is another of those as Hibs are likely to set up and frustrate their opponents.

After a glut of goals in the matches previous to it, last season’s meetings were all low-scoring. A goalless draw and two 1-1 results highlighted just how close things were between them. Rangers eventually made home advantage count in the last meeting, narrowly winning 1-0. I expect this to be another game with few goals and back the under 2.5 goals.
