Rangers Preview – Can Rangers make it to what would be a first final under Steven Gerrard?

As much as there has been progress for Rangers since the appoint of Steven Gerrard, there is still one big question they have yet to find an answer to. That is, when will they first reach a final under Gerrard and then – most importantly – when will they win that first trophy. All concerned with the club will be anticipating they answer that first question on Sunday when they contest their fourth straight League Cup semi-final. They have not reached any of the previous three finals and have consistently underperformed at this stage. Gerrard knows the pressure is on following disappointing cup displays in his first season as well as understanding how much belief can be instilled from winning the first piece of silverware of the season.

Both of Rangers games in this competition to date have been on the road. A comfortable victory over East Fife before a much more testing encounter away to Livingston sets them up for Sunday’s game. They have yet to concede a goal in the competition and are second to Celtic in the league only on goal difference.

Hearts Preview – Are Hearts able to put their off the field problems aside and spring a cup shock?

It’s been an eventful week at Tynecastle as defeat for Hearts away to St Johnstone signaled the end for Craig Levein as manager of the club. Levein has been under pressure since the start of the year following a dismal record in the league and performances being turgid. The supporters had turned a long time ago but he seemingly had the support of the Hearts’ owner – that was up until Thursday. His assistant will take charge of this game before a permanent manager is sought. Considering Hearts are only off the bottom of the table courtesy of goal difference then it’s hard to argue against the decision despite it coming just days before such an important game.

It was Celtic who ended Hearts’ challenge at this stage 12 months ago when losing 3-0. It could be argued that it was that defeat which set the team on a downwards spiral.

Key-Facts – Rangers vs Hearts

  • Rangers have started the season in strong fashion and know the pressure is on them to make that next step and win some silverware
  • Hearts sacked manager Craig Levein in the week following a string of dismal performances and results
  • Both these teams were knocked out at this stage of the competition 12 months ago and it will be the same fate for one of them

Rangers vs Hearts Betting Advice

Whilst this looks something of a mismatch, Hearts can take some confidence from the 1-1 draw with Rangers a couple of weeks ago. That sort of performance will be required if they are to spring a surprise here. Rangers will be expecting that with this game being at Hampden, on a much bigger park, it will suit their style of play. Gerrard’s men also come into this one on the back of an excellent 4-0 win away to Ross County in midweek.

The biggest concern for Rangers coming into this is if they can perform when all the expectation is on them. It’s been an issue for them in the past but considering their performances in the league this season, you sense they can manage it better. Rangers to win without conceding a goal has been a winning bet eight times this season and is the way to go here.
