Rayo Vallecano, who play in the second tier of Spain after relegation from the top flight last term, will be looking to claim an upset in Madrid on Thursday night.

They line up against La Liga’s Real Betis for a place in the round of sixteen of the Copa del Rey. This will, interestingly, be the first ever clash between the two clubs in the competition.

Real Betis can hold their own in Madrid

Betis are sat in mid table in the Spanish top fight and haven’t been in bad form recently. They have suffered just one defeat in their last nine games in all competitions. That was a loss against Atletico Madrid in the league just before December’s winter break. They have come back strongly since then.

It has been a W2 D1 return in their three games played in January 2020, one of those being a 3-0 success at Portugalete in last round of the Copa del Rey. For this, they are out on the road and up against a team who were in the top flight with them last season. It could be seen as being a bit of a banana skin of a tie.

Our betting prediction:

Betis have put together a six match unbeaten streak of form away from home in all competitions, winning half of those contests. They have secured back-to-back away defeats in the Copa del Rey to nil as well. Granted the only three wins that they have taken away from home have been in their last five played, but still, it shows improvement.

Second tier Rayo Vallecano to come up short

A positive for Rayo Vallecano is that they are undefeated in their last seven fixtures across all competitions. So that’s a plus for them and they have only shipped a goal in two of their last seven games as well. But this is a step up in level of opposition for them.

Their two games in the Copa del Rey this season have been away from home, taking a 1-0 win at Tarazone and then a 2-0 at Barakaldo. Just once in their last six games in all competitions have Rayo Vallecano scored more than one goal in a game. That ultimately, against higher-quality opposition, is where they could get tripped up.

They are sitting as a mid-table side in La Liga 2 and if perhaps they had been in sharper form there, a cup upset would have piqued a little more interest. Last season they finished bottom of La Liga to fall back down to the second tier. It looks as if it is going to be awhile before they haul themselves back up.

Rayo Vallecano vs Real Betis Betting Advice

Real Betis are undefeated in their last four games against Rayo Vallecano, winning two of those. They have scored exactly two goals in three of their last four against them. So it is the top-flight side, even away from home which gets the nod as a pick in this Copa del Rey tie.
