RB Leipzig Preview – Can pretenders continue 100% start to the season and prove they can be title contenders?

A third place finish and qualification for the Champions League was seen as a very good season for Leipzig in the previous campaign. They were unable to top it off with a trophy having been well beaten in the German Cup final by Bayern. Expectations have been increased further this season, though, following the arrival of the impressive Julian Nagelsmann. The former Hoffenheim boss was long seen as a Bayern manager and will no doubt be linked there throughout his career. However, Leipzig have been able to tempt him and it’s easy to see why he’s much sought after. It may only be three games into the season but Leipzig are the only club to have maximum points and sit top. Saturday will give us further indication if they are genuine challengers for the title.

Every challenge that Leipzig have faced this season they have coped with admirably. Newly promoted Union Berlin were dispatched 4-0 with consummate ease on the opening weekend. They were then presented with a tough double header against teams who qualified for Europe last season. A 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt preceded their most impressive performance thus far when dispatching Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 away from home. A Timo Werner hat-trick saw them to victory that night and the German striker will have a point to prove against a club who he feels has not given him the respect he deserves.

Bayern Munich Preview – Will Bayern stand up to the challenge and show their class to retake top sp0t?

It was a slog at times but Bayern were able to clinch another Bundesliga title last season and sealed the double with a 3-0 win over Leipizg in cup final. Despite that, it was still an uncomfortable season at times for Niko Kovac and he would have felt under pressure when his team dropped points on the opening day of this campaign. A 2-2 draw at home Hertha Berlin was not the start he was hoping for but Bayern have been excellent in their response. A trip to Schalke could have been testing but a Robert Lewandowski seen them ease to a first victory. Going behind Mainz at home in their last game was not in the script but the response was again emphatic. Six goals unanswered from there demonstrated just how dangerous this team can be.

Lewandowski may be 31 but he is showing no signs of slowing up. The Polish internationalist has already netted six times this season, scoring in every game. His supply line has been boosted with the signings of Ivan Perisic and Philippe Coutinho. It may not have been the signings they would have hoped for, but there’s no doubting the quality they possess.

Key-Facts – RB Leipzig v Bayern Munich

  • RB Leipzig are the only team to have maximum points after three games but this will be their first acid test
  • Bayern dropped points on the opening weekend of the season but have since been dominant scoring nine goals in two games
  • This games sees the two most lethal strikers in Germany face off. Lewandowski has scored one more than his rival Werner

RB Leipzig v Bayern Munich Betting Advice

It may only be early in the season but this already looks to be a pivotal game, particularly for the home team. Leipzig have been touted as being capable of getting closer to Bayern and Dortmund in the title race and this will put them to the test. A win would see them go five points clear which is important psychologically. However, losing at home to Bayern would not only see their opponents overtake them and go top – it would also suggest they have a bit to go.

Bayern have not won in Leipzig since their first visit back in 2017 in an incredible 5-4 win. Since then it’s been a home win and a draw and the hosts will fancy their chance of another result. They are a different team under Nagelsmann and this is a chance to prove it. At the odds, it’s worth chancing a home win and for Leipzig to continue their 100% record.
