RB Leipzig Preview – Can Leipzig rally following loss of their star mean to keep their European dream alive?

Unsurprisingly for a club of their age, this will be the first time RB Leipzig compete in the last eight of the Champions League. One key difference for them heading into tomorrow’s game, however, is there is no Timo Werner to call upon following the striker’s move to Chelsea over the summer.

Whilst their quarter-final opponents are new to this stage of the Champions League, Atletico Madrid are one of the regulars. This will be the fifth time in seven years that Diego Simeone has led his team to at least the last eight. Of course, their final appearances in 2014 and 2016 when they came so close to winning it will still be fresh in the memory. Particularly as it was their arch rivals Real who defeated them on both occasions.

Simeone will be looking at this as an ideal opportunity to reach at least the semi-finals which would be the first time since 2017 they would have achieved that.

Atleti have caused the biggest shock of the knockout stage so far when eliminating holders Liverpool and doing so with a 3-2 extra-time victory at Anfield. That win came at the start of what has been and continues to be a very impressive run of form.

Simeone’s men have not lost a game since the 1st of February. Since then they have played 18 between the Champions League and La Liga. They have won 11 of them and draw the other seven. That’s the sort of resilience we’ve come to expect from this team and why they’ll be so difficult to beat in these final stages.

 

It’s a clash between two teams who are at their best when countering which can often lead to them cancelling one another out. The fact the tie is over one leg may add to the caution we usually see from Atletico and it would be no surprise to see this game go to extra-time or beyond.
