The top two in the Bundesliga from last season meet on Saturday as RB Leipzig look to close on champions Bayern and get one over their former coach.

RB Leipzig Preview – Are Leipzig set to spoil the homecoming of their former coach and players’?

Jesse Marsch is still adjusting to life as head coach of RB Leipzig with just one win from their first three league matches. For a team who are an established force in the German top-flight, there’s no doubt it’s been something of an underwhelming start but probably to be expected considering they have lost their head coach and several key players in the summer transfer window. Julian Nagelsmann is now in charge of this weekend’s opponents after two successful seasons with Leipzig. He’s been joined by Dayo Upamencano and Marcel Sabitzer whilst Ibrahima Konate has left for Liverpool.

Those four have been fundamental to the consistency and standards set by the club in recent times and it will take time to replace their influence.

Leipzig’s only win so far has come against Stuttgart when they proved to be far too good, running out 4-0 winners. Andre Silva scored his first goal since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt. He notched 28 goals in the Bundesliga last season for his former club. Dominik Szoboszlai netted a double in that game following the midfielder’s move from Salzburg.

Away defeats to Mainz and Wolfsburg have been disappointing, however, and they didn’t score a goal in either of them. RB Leipzig will take on Manchester City in the Champions League in midweek so it’s going to be a hugely challenging few days.

Bayern Munich Preview – Can Bayern assert their authority and continue winning run?

You’re only one game away from a crisis at Bayern Munich and if Nagelsmannt had any doubt about that he would soon have known after the opening weekend draw with Borussia Moncengladbach. Bayern were imperious under Hans Flick and the expectations are they continue that under the new head coach. Since dropping those points the current champions have went on to reel off four victories and scoring 23 goals in the process.

A deserved win in the German Super Cup final over Borussia Dortmund kick started the season before rescuing three points at home to FC Cologne. They then put 11 past a hapless Bremer SV in the German Cup before a thumping 5-0 win last time out against Hertha Berlin – you sense they have found their stride now.

One man who definitely has is Robert Lewandowski. After his record breaking exploits last season the Pole is in amongst the goals once again. He’s hit five in three league games and also notched a double against Dortmund.

Bayern also have a huge game in the Champions League after this game as they visit Barcelona on Tuesday and will be hoping to make it five straight wins ahead of that heavyweight clash.

RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

This is a massive clash so early in the new Bundesliga season. Leipzig have not had the started they would have hoped for under their new head coach but did hit five in their only home match. It’s a quick return home for Nagelsmann who only left last summer and he brings back a couple of players who were hugely important in his time here.
Unsurprisingly this is a fixture that Bayern have had the upper hand in. They are unbeaten in their last seven meetings against their rivals, winning three of them.

Key Facts – RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich Betting Tip

  • Jesse Marsch has big shoes to fill following to consecutive top three finishes under Naglesmann
  • Bayern have responded to dropping points in the opening game with four straight wins and 23 goals
  • It’s three years and seven games since Leipzig defeated Bayern (March 2018)

With so many players away on international duty and the hype surrounding the return of the visiting manager I think this is a game that is likely to be very cagey and it could well be a third draw in four games at the Red Bull Arena between these two.
