RB Leipzig – Best Bundesliga defence creaking?

It would be fair to say that recent encounters between RB Leipzig (W10 D5 L3) and Mainz are seldom dull, and last week’s contest inside Opel Arena was certainly no exception. Despite twice taking the lead, it was the latter, a side that still resides second from bottom in the Bundesliga standings, who emerged with a 3-2 win. Leaveing Julian Nagelsmann and his team seven points adrift in second from leaders Bayern Munich.

That dire result meant a third winless league outing in four for Die Roten Bullen, who had dropped points in a 3-1 loss here to Borussia Dortmund and a 2-2 draw away to Wolfsburg prior to edging out Union Berlin 1-0 in their latest encounter inside the Red Bull Arena. Moreover, more goals were conceded across this four-match sequence (8) than in their previous fourteen top-flight fixtures of 2020/21 (9).

Fortunately for them, it is another home encounter which awaits on Saturday. A meeting pitting them (2nd) against the side directly below them. The positive, then, will be that RB Leipzig currently boast the strongest home record in the Bundesliga (W7 D1 L1). The concern, however, emanates from a dismal record of one win from the last eleven games (W1 D7 L3) versus sides who went into the round in the top-three.

Bayer Leverkusen – Further toil awaits in nightmare fixture?

Since the moment Bayer Leverkusen (W9 D5 L4) scaled the Bundesliga summit on 14 December on the back of eight wins in nine league outings, this team has seriously toiled. Four points from the next six fixtures signalling a fall to third in the table, now ten points further back in third from leaders Bayern and level on points with the side who inflicted a fourth loss in six last time out at the BayArena.

That side being Wolfsburg, who were perhaps a little fortunate to emerge with the three points after losing the xG battle 1.04 to 1.57, according to Infogol. Nevertheless it compounded a wretched period for Die Werkself who have one win to their name in their last six attempts and have now lost four times in their past six matches – a far cry from having begun the season unbeaten in twelve.

Meanwhile, not since the start of the 2017/18 season have the club suffered three successive away league defeats. A run that can be matched on Saturday after losing each of their previous two away assignments by the odd goal against Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin. It is therefore ominous that against no other Bundesliga side do Leverkusen retain a worse points per game average (0.78) than RB Leipzig.

RB Leipzig Vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Advice

There are several tantalising clashes in prospect over the coming weekend in Germany. However this one, between the sides in second and third, is undoubtedly vying for top billing. Especially as both sets of players will be determined to the right the wrongs from last week, when RB Leipzig were stunned in Mainz (3-2) and Bayer Leverkusen extended their woeful sequence of results by losing at home to Wolfsburg (0-1).

RB Leipzig Vs Bayer Leverkusen – Key Facts:

  • No team has more points (22 from 27) from home matches than RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga this term, while only FC Koln prevented Die Roten Bullen from scoring at Red Bull Arena in 2020/21.
  • Only champions Bayern Munich have registered more points away from home so far this campaign than Bayer Leverkusen (17 from 27), netting at least once in seven of nine away league outings.
  • In the nine previous Bundesliga meetings between these clubs, only once, in a 4-1 success here at Red Bull Arena in April 2018, did Bayer Leverkusen emerge victorious.

Recent history would also indicate that there is every likelihood of both teams making a mark on proceedings. Seven of these teams nine head-to-head matches in the Bundesliga resulted in both teams scoring, including all of the last four, while each of the last three produced a 1-1 scoreline. To strengthen the case for goals, RB Leipzig have leaked eight in their past four top-flight fixtures while Leverkusen are without a clean sheet in six attempts.
