RB Leipzig – Another English scalp in the offing?

Beaten semi-finalists in 2019/20. It was in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie that RB Leipzig delivered arguably their most accomplished collective performance of the tournament, dismantling another team from the English Premier League, Tottenham, in Germany when winning 3-0 inside Red Bull Arena. It marked their first of three victories recorded in four meetings versus sides from England.

The most recent of those was their 3-2 win over Manchester United in December which helped them clinch qualification, despite very nearly surrendering a three-goal lead in Germany. Bearing in mind they won all three of their group games as hosts, and 13 of 15 such matches in all competitions in 2020-21 so far, having to therefore play Tuesday’s encounter on neutral territory is a significant blow.

However, recent form is undoubtedly on their side. Friday’s 2-1 scoreline in their home Bundesliga clash with FC Augsburg extended their run of consecutive victories to four, while the goal they conceded – a converted penalty – halted a run of three successive clean sheets for goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. After spending six largely anonymous years with Liverpool, the Hungarian could have a big role to play on his return home.

Liverpool – Europe a welcome distraction from domestic woes?

It was in the Round of 16 last season that then holders Liverpool bowed out in sensational fashion, conceding three times in extra-time at Anfield as Atletico Madrid – the side beaten 2-1 on aggregate in the following round by Tuesday’s opponents – progressed at the expense of the European champions. A 1-0 defeat in the first-leg remains their sole away reverse in their last six European fixtures (W4 D1).

Furthermore, the Reds were unbeaten in their previous eight Round of 16 matches (W6 D2) prior to facing the Spanish side, while they remain undefeated versus German opposition across the past ten such encounters (W7 D3). The most recent of those coming in 2018/19, a 3-1 victory on the road against last season’s champions Bayern Munich, en route to securing the club’s sixth European title.

Performances so far this season, though, would indicate an arduous journey awaits if England’s most decorated club are to make their third Champions League final appearance in four seasons. Last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester made it three on the spin for the first time in more than six years, after yet another error-strewn display, leaving them thirteen points adrift of the Premier League summit in fourth.

RB Leipzig Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

With just three wins in their past twelve competitive matches (W3 D3 L6) – losing the last three in a row, the first time that has happened since November 2014 – it is no exaggeration to say Liverpool are toiling right now. From steam-rolling all comers last season to looking bereft of confidence and self-belief this time around, the marked decline since cruising to a maiden Premier League title in 2019/20 has been remarkable.

RB Leipzig Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • During this season’s group stage of the Champions League, RB Leipzig finished in second place in Group H (W4 L2) whereas Liverpool topped Group D (W4 D1 L1).
  • RB Leipzig have been victorious in three of their four matches (L1) versus sides from England, however, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last ten (W7 D3) against German opposition.
  • This will mark the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Liverpool did, however, beat perennial German champions Bayern Munich 3-1 on their last visit to the country.

By contrast, RB Leipzig are enjoying their best period of the season, with four straight victories coming into Tuesday’s contest at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary. The German side also boast one of the leanest defences on the continent (18 conceded in 21 league games), facing a depleted and seemingly demoralised opponent that has scored no more than one goal in eight of their past twelve games.
