RB Leipzig Preview – Home comforts hands Germans the initiative?

Just how important Alexander Sorloth’s late strike in Turkey proves to be remains to be seen, but the Norwegian could not have timed scoring his first goal for the club much better than in the 92nd minute of a Champions League game his new employers really had to be winning. RB Leipzig (W3 L2) did win, edging a pulsating seven-goal affair 4-3 away to Istanbul Basaksehir – Man Utd’s conquerors on Matchday 3.

If the side bottom of the group can register all three points at home to Manchester United then, by that logic, RB Leipzig must have incredibly strong claims. Moreover, if RB Leipzig can go to the reigning German and European champions Bayern Munich at the weekend and hold their own, they can certainly seek to do something similar at a ground they have won all seven competitive matches so far in 2020/21.

Earning a deserved point from Sunday’s enthralling spectacle in Munich, twice taking the lead in a 3-3 draw, will have given Julian Nagelsmann’s side a huge and timely boost in confidence ahead of a game they simply must win. A draw would leave them requiring a minor miracle in Paris, where PSG would have to lose at home to Istanbul Basakehir, while defeat would condemn the Germans to the Europa League.

Manchester United Preview – Ole leaning on his Portuguese superhero?

While it isn’t quite a win or bust scenario for Manchester United (W3 L2), it isn’t far off. A win or a draw in Germany against RB Leipzig will suffice in order for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team to book their place in the Round of 16 draw schedule for 14th December. But then this was also true ahead of last week’s clash at Old Trafford with PSG, which the Red Devils lost 3-1 to leave Group H tantalisingly poised.

In the Premier League on Saturday, United performed their now customary trick of allowing the opposition to score first before surging back into the contest and ultimately prevailing, as they’ve now done in all five league games in 2020/21. It is a trick clearly reserved for domestic audiences because in Europe they have beaten PSG in Paris but lost in Turkey to Istanbul Basaksehir, coming from behind to win neither.

Solskjaer tried to hand several of his senior players a much needed rest over the weekend, but both Fernandes and Rashford were introduced at the break with United 1-0 down and not playing particularly well away to West Ham. The subs had the desired affect, inspiring a 3-1 victory that was comfortable in the end, whilst also exposing how reliant this manager and team are on one single player: Bruno Fernandes.

RB Leipzig Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Flawless at their Red Bull Arena so far this season, RB Leipzig need only continue doing what they have been all season, which is winning all eight competitive matches played on home soil whilst scoring two or more in each. No visiting team, meanwhile, has managed to score more than once so far in 2020/21, however, away day specialists Manchester United will have other ideas, that is for sure.

RB Leipzig Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • At home this season, RB Leipzig have won all eight competitive matches, scoring at least twice in each whilst allowing only four goals (and never conceding more than one).
  • Manchester United have failed to win one of nine away matches in 2020/21 (2-1 vs Istanbul Basaksehir), scoring three or more seven times but keeping only two clean sheets.
  • In the clubs’ only previous match-up, which came on Matchday 2 of this season’s competition, Man Utd romped to a 5-0 success at Old Trafford over in England.

Aside from a shocking display and result in Turkey, when losing 2-1 to Istanbul Basaksehir, Manchester United have barely put a foot out of place on their travels this season, winning eight of nine away matches across all competitions. Remarkably, they scored three times on no fewer than seven separate occasions. The potential for goals is high therefore, especially as we know neither will take falling behind lightly.
