Reading will be in an upbeat mood when they return to their Madejski Stadium for this Saturday afternoon clash with Bristol City following their 2-0 win away at Birmingham City last time out.
Reading currently occupy 11th place in the Championship after making a mixed start to the new campaign which has seen The Royals register wins over both of the west midlands clubs, Aston Villa (at home) and the aforementioned Birmingham City (away from home).
However, the hosts have also fallen to defeats against QPR and Preston North End although both of these losses were incurred away from home. But back on home turf, Reading are still unbeaten having won six of their last seven overall, and indeed are unbeaten in their last 13 matches. Perhaps it’s no surprise that The Royals are a hard team to beat on home soil as manager Jaap Stam’s influence grows.
Visitors Bristol City avoided relegation in reasonably comfortable fashion last season as they finished in 17th place, but this was largely thanks to Chelsea’s loan striker Tammy Abraham who bagged 23 goals in last term’s campaign for The Robins.
Abraham has since moved to Premier League outfit Swansea City, so it now remains to be seen who can take up the goalscoring reigns at Ashton Gate, and although Bristol City also occupy a mid-table position ahead of this afternoon’s encounter, early signs suggest they are missing the goalscoring output of Abraham.
After an opening day 3-1 home win over Barnsley, The Robins have lost at Birmingham City and then drawn their next three matches with Brentford, Millwall and Aston Villa, with perhaps the lack of cutting edge up front holding them back.
But with just two away wins from their last 20 on the road for Bristol City, I have to give Reading the nod here.
