It’s a big game in the context of the bottom of the table at the Madejski Stadium on Wednesday. Reading can virtually guarantee their Championship status with a win whilst Wigan are looking to move out the bottom three.

Reading Preview – Can Royals find the victory that would all but ensue their place in the Championship for next season?

Mark Bowen had the sole objective of keeping Reading in the Championship when he took over earlier this season and it’s looking as though he’ll achieve that. The Royals lost just two of 14 games before coming up against leaders West Brom in the middle of this month, and also lost last time out away to Leeds who sit second in the Championship.
The character of this Reading team is apparent, however, as sandwiched between those defeats to the top two as an impressive 3-0 win away to Sheffield Wednesday. If they can get another three points tomorrow it would essentially see them safe for another season.

Winning at home has been an issue for Reading of late as they have failed to win any of their last four at the Madejski Stadium. Their last win here came back on Boxing Day against QPR and since then it’s just two points from a possible 12.
It’s a run which Bowen will be keen to bring to an end here and as he bids to remove any lingering doubt or fears that his team will be dragged into the relegation dogfight.

Wigan Preview – Will Wigan repeat their weekend win and make it back to back league victories for the first time this season?

Wigan finished 12 points clear of the bottom three last season and supporters would have been hoping – if not expecting – their team to be in a similar sort of position this time around. It’s been much more challenging for Paul Cook’s team, however, as the Lactics have been in the relegation zone for much of the campaign. Saturday’s win over Millwall was their third in six matches and they have lost only once during that time but it comes on the back of a real poor run of form before that which seen them win one of 16 league games.

All concerned will be hoping they can continue their revival in form to pull clear of their current position.

Wigan ended last season very strongly by losing just one of their last 13 league games, winning five of them. You sense that a similar sort of end to the season could be enough but that earlier season form has put them in a much more precarious position.

The fact that a win on Wednesday would see them record back to back victories for the first time in the league this season tells it’s own story. But should they prevail it could well be a significant one and see them climb out the bottom three.

Reading vs Wigan Betting Advice

It was a comfortable 3-1 win for Reading when they made the trip north earlier in the season during a period where Wigan were really struggling. Cook’s men are definitely in a better place at the moment but there remains a lot of work to do.
For the hosts it’s all about returning to form at home and if they can get a first win in five here it would mean they go 11 points clear of their opponents.

Key Facts – Reading vs Wigan Betting Tip

  • Reading have taken just two points from their last four home games in the Championship
  • It’s now just one defeat in six for Wigan but they remain in the bottom three and two points from safety
  • Wigan are out for revenge having lost 3-1 at home to Reading back on the final day of November

Reading and Wigan are amongst the teams with the lowest average goals in the Championship at 2.32 and 2.47 respectively. Wigan are the joint-second lowest scorers in the league and with four of Reading’s last five at home containing two or fewer goals, it makes under 2.5 goals an appealing selection for Wednesday’s game.
