Preview: Sunday’s venue is becoming one of the most daunting on the La Liga calendar, with Real Betis winning five of the last seven La Liga matches at their Benito Villamarin. This spells trouble for a Villarreal side who may have won the reverse fixture but have toiled away from home all season.

Real Betis – Could Thursday’s CDL exploits prove a hindrance?

Among the oldest adages in football is you don’t feel tiredness when you’re winning matches. Manuel Pellegrini will hope this is true of his Real Betis charges on Sunday when they take on quality opposition in the shape of Villarreal, who won this season’s reverse fixture in comfortable fashion in October, less than 72 hours after powering into the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Winning 4-0 at Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Los Verdiblancos are clearly riding the crest of a wave right now, as they also sit third in La Liga. With Barcelona five points back in fifth, three points would go a long way to consolidating the club’s push for a return to the Champions League. And after a slow start to the year initially (D1 L1), they are up and running once more, winning back-to-back against Alaves and Espanyol. Making it six wins from nine in La Liga.

Key Stat: Five of Real Betis’ six victories at home in La Liga this term saw them cover a -1.5 handicap. Los Verdiblancos have scored at least three times in five of the last seven league games at Benito Villamarin, a ground they are W6 D2 L3 for the season.

Villarreal – Away day woes holding back top-six push?

Start as you mean to go on. That would have been the message to the Villarreal dressing room prior to opening their accounts in 2022 with a 5-0 rout of La Liga’s bottom club Levante. The effects of which were seemingly short-lived. The Yellow Submarine subsequently drew at home to Atletico Madrid before slumping to a hugely frustrating 1-0 loss away to lowly Elche, for their fourth road defeat of 2021-22 (W1 D5).

A 3-0 victory over Mallorca at El Madrigal did at least ensure Unai Emery’s men went into the recent break with some semblance of confidence restored. They have now won five of the last seven in La Liga, a marked improvement on their lethargic showing early doors when winning only three of the first fifteen league games. More importantly, they are now only four points from the Champions League places in seventh.

Key Stat: Villarreal’s struggles away from home are clear for all to see, winning only one of ten La Liga away games in 2021-22. They would fail to score more than once in all but two of these games, managing to score none at all on six occasions.

Real Betis Vs Villarreal Betting Advice

Villarreal have won one of the last four La Liga meetings (D1 L2) between the teams at this venue, but did deservedly win the pair first league meeting of this term, running out 2-0 winners at El Madrigal. A league double looks set to elude them, however, unless they can improve upon a dismal away record this season (W1 D5 L4), scoring a measly seven times – and only twice more than once – from ten La Liga road trips.

Real Betis Vs Villarreal – Key Facts:

  • The points were Villarreal’s when the sides met first time around in the season, a 2-0 win that was a lot more comfortable than the scoreline suggested (xG: VIL 2.68 – 0.55 RLB).
  • However, the Yellow Submarine haven’t fared so well as the visiting side in this fixture, losing two of the last four such meetings (W1 D1).
  • Real Betis also boast one of the strongest home record in La Liga this term (W6 D2 L3). Conversely, Villarreal’s W1 D5 L4 return away from home is among the worst.

An important factor to note, though, is Real Betis’ continued involvement in the Copa del Rey, having featured in that competition on Thursday. Manuel Pellegrini’s team are presented with a short turnaround, although a 4-0 victory in said outing could be the antidote to any fatigue. Moreover, Los Verdiblancos have been outstanding hosts of late, winning five of the last seven while racking up 18 goals, and should be too strong for such modest travellers.
