Barcelona held the upper hand in midweek when these two clashed in the semi-final of the Copa Del Rey so Real Madrid will be out for revenge and also in the hope of keeping their flagging titles hopes alive.

Real Madrid Preview

It was yet another humbling El Clasico for Real Madrid in the Bernabeu on Wednesday night as they went down 3-0 to their archest of rivals. It was also another indication of just how inconsistent this team is under Solari. At the start of February, Real went away from home in La Liga to pick up a valuable 2-1 win away to Atletico in a ground where few teams leave with anything. That was seen as a turning point or at least an illustration of Solari beginning to find some consistency and a standard we come to expect from the current European champions. It was followed with a deserved 1-1 draw in the first leg of their semi-final clash with Barca in the Nou Camp and a win away to Ajax in the last-16 of the Champions League. All was progressing well until their dire performance in midweek and we’re now back to questioning the credentials of this group of players who have flattered to deceive on one too many occasions already this season. They do, at least, get an instant chance of a reprieve with Saturday’s league fixture and know that should they fail to take all three points they can wave goodbye to a second trophy in the space of three days.

Key-Facts – Real Madrid v Barcelona

  • It’s a quick rematch for these two following Barcelona’s 3-0 win in the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday at the Bernabeu
  • Real know that they need to win in order to have any chance of winning La Liga this season
  • Barca will be confident of victory having won on four of their last five visits to the Bernabeu

Barcelona Preview

The last week of February and the first fortnight at the beginning of March was always looking like being season-defining for Barcelona and they have negotiated the first third of that period especially well. A come-from-behind 4-2 win away to a Sevilla team who are extremely impressive at home was then followed with the emphatic 3-0 win in Madrid on Wednesday. The only surprise about the latter of those victories was that Barcelona scored three times and Lionel Messi never got one of them. Both were big wins as they came on the back of a couple of insipid performances and it has now set them up to kick on in the next couple of weeks where some other massive games lie in wait. Should they win tomorrow, Barcelona would take a huge step towards retaining their title before taking on Lyon in their own last-16 encounter in a tie that sits at 0-0 from the first leg. The treble is very much on for Ernesto Valverde’s men but that was also the case last season at an even later stage so it’s just about taking each game as it comes and hoping that they can peak at the right time.

Real Madrid v Barcelona Betting Preview

Real Madrid need a reaction to the result and performance from Wednesday night. It was yet another indication of how dominant this Barcelona team have been in recent times and that seems to be playing on the minds of the Madrid players. When Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the second half, there was only going to be one winner and that’s the way it turned out. Because of the recency of that loss, the home fans will be expecting their team to come straight out and take the game to Barca tomorrow which may well play into the hands of the visitors.

In the preview for Wednesday’s game, I noted how much Barcelona have enjoyed their trips to Madrid to face Real – and we got more evidence of that. The Catalonians have won on four of their last five visits to the Bernabeu and I am hopeful they can take another victory home with them tomorrow. The return to full fitness for Messi has coincided with two of their best performances of the season thus far and that comes as no surprise. Real have already lost three times at home in the league this season and Barca have the best record on the road – losing just once. There’s nine points between the two rivals in the visitors favour going into this, and I’m keen on them extending that to 12.
