Spanish La Liga
Pick: Real Madrid Win To Nil
Odds: 37/40

Preview: The La Liga leaders have been in imperious form since the La Liga restart, with Real Madrid recording seven wins out of seven to sit four points clear. Surely an Alaves side in dire straits, having lost five consecutive games, will simply be squatted aside at the Alfredo di Stefano in Madrid?

Real Madrid Preview – Los Blancos inching towards the title with minimal fuss?

Another workmanlike performance from Zinedine Zidane’s men ensured there was to be no slip-up at San Mames last time out. Real Madrid (1st – W23 D8 L3) once again benefiting from some curious decision making from the Video Assistant Referee, which awarded them a penalty but ignored Athletic Bilbao’s strong claims for one up the other end of the pitch, as Sergio Ramos’ spot-kick sealed a third consecutive 1-0 scoreline in La Liga.

The league title now seems destined to return to Madrid for the first time since 2016-17, with Real sitting pretty at the top boasting a four point lead over Barcelona – who have recently resorted to accusations of bias towards Real Madrid from referees. Los Blancos have received three penalties in their last five games alone, aiding them in maintaining their flawless form since the restart having won all seven fixtures thus far.

Real have rode their luck in some games, but there is nothing lucky about only two goals conceded in seven post-restart fixtures. Sunday’s clean sheet in Bilbao was their fourth on the spin, all in victories of course, and their fifth overall. Meanwhile, Ramos now has five goals in seven appearances – more than any player since the La Liga resumption. Absurd scoring form from a central defender even if he does benefit from penalties.

Alaves Preview – Managerial change to spark dramatic improvement in fortunes?

Since a 2-0 victory at home to Real Sociedad in their second match back following the enforced break, the form of Alaves (16th – W9 D8 L17) has been non-existent. That result moved them on to 35 points, comfortably clear of the relegation places and realistically needing only one more win to rubber-stamp their participation in next season’s La Liga campaign. This level of comfort has evidently come back to bite them.

Complacency has well and truly kicked in because Alaves haven’t conjured a single goal, let alone a point, since that last win – over a talented Real Sociedad side no less who, at that moment, were still very much in contention for the top-four. They were beaten heavily just days later, losing 6-0 at relegation rivals Celta Vigo, in a demoralising result that has clearly had a snowball affect.

Saturday’s 1-0 loss in Valladolid marked a fifth consecutive defeat to nil and proved the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as club officials were concerned, with manager Asier Garitano subsequently dismissed and swiftly replaced by former Malaga and Levante coach Juan Muniz. The 51-year-old’s first task will be to extract an improved performance – or better still, a positive outcome – from a trip to face the league leaders.

Real Madrid Vs Alaves Betting Advice

This should be a fairly regulation win for Real Madrid in their march towards La Liga title number 34. No surprises what the recommended bet is either. Zinedine Zidane’s side have secured maximum points in all seven fixture since the restart, five of which without conceding a goal including all of the last four. Alaves haven’t scored in five successive games meanwhile, losing on each occasion.

Real Madrid Vs Alaves – Key Facts

  • Seven wins from seven La Liga games since the restart for Real Madrid – the only side to have won 100% of their fixtures during this period.
  • Five consecutive league defeats without scoring for Alaves, whose last goals came in a shock 2-0 home victory over Real Sociedad on 18 June.
  • Real Madrid have won six of seven meetings (W6 L1) with Alaves since the latter’s promotion to Spain’s top division in 2016-17, winning all three home clashes without conceding.

Aside from allowing six goals fairly recently at Celta Vigo, this Alaves side are famed for its defensive organisation and are seldom thrashed. Yet this season has seen them conceded three or more away to Barcelona, Granada, Osasuna, Real Sociedad and Villarreal. However, Real Madrid have only netted more than twice in a league game on two occasions in eleven prior attempts. Real Madrid & Under 3.5 Goals appeals at even money (Betway).
