Barcelona have regained top spot in La Liga in recent weeks but Real Madrid have a quick chance of overtaking their rivals with the second El Clasico of the season taking place on Sunday evening in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid Preview – Can Real put poor recent run of form behind them and go back top of La Liga?

It’s been a testing couple of weeks for Real Madrid and their coach Zinedine Zidane. Having went 15 games unbeaten in La Liga to go top of the table, it’s now just one point from their last two league games – surrendering their position in first place to their arch rivals Barcelona. Wednesday also seen them lost at home to Manchester City in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie leaving them huge amounts to do to remain in Europe.
Zidane will now be looking for a big reaction from his players in the biggest game of them all.

There will not be any panicking from the players or coaching staff as Real can go back top of the La Liga should they win on Sunday. Where there may be some concern is the poor record Zidane has in terms of the league across his two spells in charge. The title success back in 2017 is the only triumph and there is a question whether they have the consistency to add to that.
Real will take confidence from the fact they are unbeaten at home in La Liga this season, winning eight of their 12 games.

Barcelona Preview – Are Barca set to turn on the style and pull clear of their rivals in the title race?

The change in head coach from Ernesto Valverde to Quique Setien at the beginning of this year was a surprise for some and long overdue for others. Regardless of the merits of the decision it’s one which has seen a change in style from the champions to a more possession-based game. There have been some disappointments already but supporters will point to the fact they are back top and also in with a good chance of making the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Barca’s 1-1 draw in Naples in midweek makes them big favourites to progress from that tie but whilst they were better in the second half, performances will have to be better if they are to be considered challengers for that competition.

It’s now four league wins in a row for Barca.  They’ve only won more games consecutively (five between September and October) on one occasion this season. All but one of those games has been by a margin of one goal so they’re not blowing teams away.

Barcelona’s injury problems continue to escalate with Gerard Pique the latest player to be sidelined. He joins the likes of Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Roberto.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Betting Advice

It’s fair to say this has not been a vintage season for either of Spain’s big two and that was evident in the first meeting of the season, a goalless draw back in December. That’s no real surprise either due to the misfiring Barcelona at the time and Real Madrid’s goal scoring problems there for all to see.
With so much riding on this game we can only hope for a more entertaining 90 minutes and living up to it’s El Clasico billing.

Key Facts – Real Madrid vs Barcelona Betting Tip

  • A 15 match unbeaten run in the league for Real came to an end last week away to Levante
  • Barcelona have won four straight in La Liga to go two points clear at the top
  • The first El Clasico of the season was a dour goalless draw at the Nou Camp back in December

Six of Barcelona’s last eight away games in La Liga have had three or more goals in them. Thirteen of the last 16 El Clasicos in La Liga have went over 2.5 goals. With Real needing to win to go back top it will hopefully make for a more open game. As such, back over 2.5 goals tomorrow.
