Real Madrid – Zidane honing in on another final?

13-time European champions Real Madrid have made surprisingly light work of their knockout ties thus far. Zinedine Zidane’s men were unconvincing during the group phase, only winning three of six games, but made tricky assignments with Atalanta (1-0a, 3-1h), a losing semi-finalist last season, and Liverpool (3-1h, 0-0a), the winners of this competition in 2018/19, look relatively simple thereafter.

Los Blancos have now won six of their last eight matches (D1 L1) in this competition, having previously won once in six, so appear to have rediscovered their swagger when it comes to playing Champions League football. Their recent record as hosts isn’t great, though. That clinical display against Liverpool in the prior round just their fifth win across their previous eleven home European games (D2 L4).

Zidane’s men have, however, beaten all of Atalanta, Gladbach, Inter Milan as well as English champions Liverpool in Spain so far this season. Meanwhile, only the contest with German club Gladbach saw them successfully prevent the opposing attack from scoring, suggesting this Real Madrid backline, which recorded a fourth successive clean sheet (W1 D3) over the weekend in a goalless draw with Real Betis, can be got at.

0-0 Draw (Correct Score)

Chelsea – Blues go to Spain confident of a result?

A first Champions League semi-final since 2014 was just reward for edging Portuguese champions FC Porto 2-1 on aggregate in the previous round. This despite a goal of the season contender from Mehdi Taremi consigning Chelsea to a 1-0 defeat in the return leg, which was played out in Spain the same as the first leg, with that representing the English club’s first loss of this European campaign (W7 D2 previously).

Chelsea had claimed the impressive scalp of Atletico Madrid, Liverpool’s conquerors last season and the current league leaders in Spain, in tidy fashion in the previous round. Home (2-0) and away (0-1) victories ensuring serene progress over Diego Simeone’s charges. The Blues also got the better of another Spanish side during the group, following up a 1-1 draw in England by thrashing Sevilla 4-0 in Spain.

It all means Chelsea retain a perfect away record in Europe this term, with five wins, an average of 2.1 goals scored and just the one conceded. Clearly this represents another stern test, arguably their toughest yet, but they approach it full of confidence following Saturday’s huge victory against West Ham that seen them return to the Premier League top four – a week on from beating Man City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Real Madrid Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

In a short space of time, Thomas Tuchel has stamped his mark all over this Chelsea team, who play in a highly-structured, compact manner as their attackers methodically probe for openings. Unfortunately for us, Real Madrid provided a near-identical blueprint in their goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield. So we could be in for a stalemate here, albeit neither of these teams play with the same formation.

Real Madrid Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Something may have to give in Madrid. Real Madrid have won four of five home European game this season, however, Chelsea boast a perfect record on their travels.
  • Between them, these teams have not conceded a single goal in their last seven matches combined (4 clean sheets in a row for Real Madrid, 3 for Chelsea).
  • Real Madrid eliminated English champions Liverpool in the round prior. Whereas Chelsea claimed the scalp of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid during the Round of 16.

Real Madrid have not conceded in their past four matches in all competitions but could only convert one (1-0 vs promoted Cadiz) into victory. Zidane will be boosted by the returning Eden Hazard, but more importantly Raphael Varane to bolster the defensive ranks. As for Chelsea, they’ve conceded once in five away European games this season, and kept their third successive clean sheet at the weekend. Anyone for 0-0?
