At the recent rate Barcelona are dropping points, Real Madrid (1st – W21 D8 L3), who are now two points in the clear atop La Liga, may not even need to win all of their remaining matches should their nearest rivals continue to throw them favours. An important result, not merely for it coming against a direct rival for European qualification but because it enabled them to close the gap on Sevilla in fourth to two points. A gap that will likely have grown prior to kick-off.
Depending on how Sevilla fared in Leganes on Tuesday, Getafe will know the significance of winning or losing on Thursday. History tells us it will likely be the latter, having lost their past ten encounters with Real Madrid away from home. Ominously, the last nine were by a margin of two clear goals – though a 2-0 scoreline last season did represent their first failure to score in this fixture in five seasons.
Unfortunately, scoring hasn’t come naturally to Jose Bordalas’ team of late, with Monday’s win against Sociedad the first time more than one goal was netted in nine league games, a period in which they managed only two wins (W2 D4 L3).
