Carlo Ancelotti never won a La Liga title in his first spell as head coach of Real Madrid but it is looking increasingly likely he is going to achieve that this time around. Sevilla’s goalless draw on Friday means the current leaders can go eight points clear with 11 games to go. There would be still work to do but it would be a big step towards regaining the title they loss to city rivals Atletico last season.
It would also give them a big boost heading into the return leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at home to PSG in midweek. Real currently trail 1-0 and were very much second best in Paris so know they need to improve to keep their European dream alive.

La Real’s season has been something of a mixed bag. Their start was very encouraging with only one defeat in their first 14 games and they were dreaming of what might be. Towards the end of 2021 the wheels started to come off somewhat and they only picked up one win in their next nine. A top four finish and Champions League football appeared to be drifting away from them rapidly.
The last month or so has began to get them hoping again, though. They come into this game with three wins in their last four to sit on the fringes of the top four.

Their three wins have came in games you would expect them to beat with all the teams currently in the bottom three. But it is a spark they hope to take on into their remaining matches. It looks very much like being a battle between themselves and four others for two positions – only a couple of points separate them and third place Real Betis with Villareal sitting a couple of points below La Real.
There’s no getting away from home important Mikel Oyarzabal is for this team. The Spanish internationalist is well on course to hit double figures in La Liga for the fifth straight season and could well break his best tally which is 13 (currently on eight).
