Real Madrid – Los Blancos labouring towards La Liga crescendo?

Back-to-back La Liga titles is very much on for Real Madrid, who did the absolute bare minimum in the penultimate round to scrape past a resolute Athletic Bilbao at San Mames. That it was another underwhelming display, requiring a collector’s item of a goal from defender Nacho (the 31-year-old’s first of the campaign and only the eighth of his entire career), will be of some concern to Zinedine Zidane.

Los Blancos’ supposedly outgoing manager – rumours persist that Zidane already informed his squad he is leaving at the end of this season – has masterminded three wins in four since the beginning of May. Despite his team producing inferior xG numbers in two of those. In fact, Real Madrid have come out second best on xG in five of their last eight league games, so were fortunate to record five wins and three draws.

This final encounter will be anything but a formality then. Facing upcoming Europa League finalists who need a positive outcome to bolster their hopes of returning to Europe next season. Meanwhile Real, now unbeaten in La Liga since January (W12 D5) but with only one win from the last three here at Alfredo di Stefano, must better whatever Atletico Madrid achieve away in Valladolid to maintain the status quo.

Villarreal – Emery’s men rarely overawed on their travels?

The top-four is set is stone but there is still a three-way battle on to decide which of Real Sociedad (59 points), Real Betis (58 but boasting a superior head-to-head record) and Villarreal (58) qualify for next season’s Europa League. So long as Unai Emery’s men better the result of at least one of those sides, a spot in the group stage of a competition they may even end up winning next Wednesday will be theirs.

Emery would much rather have had the top-six sewn up by now, thus enabling him to rotate ahead of Wednesday’s final against Manchester United. It is a luxury he is not afford, however, despite his team picking up nine of the last twelve points – the only defeat across their previous four La Liga outings a 4-2 scoreline at home to Celta Vigo. A game they were reduced to nine men on the stroke of half-time.

Interestingly, there hasn’t been a drawn encounter involving the Yellow Submarine since mid-February (W7 L6). They’ve travelled especially well, losing only two of ten on the road in La Liga in 2021, having won four of the past five said matches. Meanwhile last week’s 4-0 rout of Sevilla, who held Real Madrid 2-2 here earlier this month, won’t have done their burgeoning self-belief any harm either.

Real Madrid Vs Villarreal Betting Advice

With the La Liga title and Europa League qualification on the line, both Real Madrid and Villarreal would have much rather come up against middling opposition with nothing to play for in this final round. That hasn’t been the case, though, and the fact neither can contemplate a loss should mean we are treated to a tense encounter in Madrid, where Real scraped 3-2 and 2-1 wins in this fixture in the last two campaigns.

Real Madrid Vs Villarreal – Key Facts:

  • The previous two La Liga meetings in Madrid between these sides were both won by Real Madrid. However, the home side had managed one win in four prior encounters in the Spanish capital (W1 D2 L1).
  • Real Madrid are unbeaten in the league since January (W12 D5), winning the last two, but boast one win from their last three fixtures on home soil (W1 D2).
  • Lionel Messi (30) is the only player to notch more goals in La Liga this term than Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno, with 14 of his 23 strikes coming on the road.

Villarreal arrive in Madrid in bullish mood. The Yellow Submarine have avoided defeat in this fixture in three of the past six seasons (W1 D2), won three of their last four in La Liga without conceding, and boast wins in four of the last five away from home. Real Madrid have to win. However, they’ve failed more than half of the time when hosting the current top six in the table (W2 D3), recently drawing here with Real Betis and Sevilla.
