Two of the leading teams in the Western Conference face each other this week as Real Salt Lake look to move within a point of the current champions, Seattle Sounders.

Real Salt Lake Preview – Can Real defeat the champions and record their first home win of the campaign?

Frederico Juarez celebrated one year in charge of Real Salt Lake last month and he will be pleased with how his team have progressed under his tenure. Real were eliminated in last years playoffs by the eventual winners who just happen to be their next opponents. It was a 2-0 defeat on that occasion as the incredible record of home teams continued in this fixture.

It’s been a strong enough start to this campaign with just one loss in their first seven games but Juarez will be looking to pick up some more victories having also drawn four so far.

 

The format of the opening round of games means that Real Salt Lake have only beaten Colorado Rapids – beating them home and away. Their one loss so far (which counts for league points) has come against Sporting KC who sit top of the Western Conference.

Real Salt Lake’s previous game seen them sharing the points and eight goals with Portland Timbers on the road. Two goals in added time rescued a point for Juarez’ men and the nature of the game will make that seem like a win. They’ll be hoping to build on that in this one.

With two MLS Cups in four seasons and finishing runners up in that time as well, it’s fair to say that Seattle have found a strategy which sees them peak at just the right time. This has coincided with the appointment of Brian Schmetzer back in 2016 and the head coach continues to keep the Sounders at the top of the tree.

Seattle’s start to this season has been another strong one as they sit in second spot of the Western Conference, two points behind the leaders but having played a game less.

A key to Seattle’s success is their excellent defence and that’s evident again this season with the third best defensive record in the competition. The team have reset since losing heavily to Los Angeles in the knockout phase of the MLS is Back tournament. Having lost 4-1, the Sounders have beaten their rivals Portland 3-0 away from home before getting revenge on LA last time out – coasting to a 3-1 home win.

US International Josh Morris has been in good form in the opening weeks, too, with five goals in eight games. He’s well on his way to beating his best tally of 14 which was back in 2016.

 

This game brings together two of the three best defences in the Western Conference. Although Real Salt Lake conceded four in their previous game they have kept two clean sheets in their four home games. Six of the last seven meetings have also went under 2.5 goals and that’s the selection for this one.
