Preview: The Copa del Rey has reached the semi-final stage, which means two-legs will determine who progresses onto the final. Real Sociedad are the overwhelming favourites to prevail in this one, though the La Liga side must be wary of a Mirandes team that has so far thrived against all odds.

Real Sociedad Preview – Real Madrid conquerors now worthy favourites?

From being a prominent outsider in the competition’s outright betting to being considered favourites to lift the trophy. Real Sociedad’s stunning victory at the Santiago Bernabeu was among a number of high-profile shocks during the previous round and, as the highest ranked team left standing, implored bookmakers to install the club from the Basque Country as the most likely to win the tournament from here on out. La Real are 5/4 with Bet365 to add a third Copa del Rey to their list of honours.

Before thoughts turn to a first final since 1988 however, a semi-final needs navigating. Performances in this competition thus far suggest there really shouldn’t be much to worry about. The earlier rounds saw them brush aside Becerril and Ceuta, winning 8-0 and 4-0 away respectively. La Liga duo Espanyol (2-0) and Osasuna (3-1) were comfortably beaten at home, while they were 4-1 ahead at one stage before eventually holding out to beat Real Madrid 4-3 in the Spanish capital.

Sunday’s victory in the league over Athletic Bilbao, winning 2-1 at home, was also a timely boost ahead of this fixture. That result coming on the back of three La Liga defeats in four to subsequently lift them back up to sixth in the standings, two points off Champions League football. At their Anoeta Stadium meanwhile, Sociedad have won eight of thirteen encounters in league and cup (W8 D2 L3) and are currently enjoying a four-match winning run in San Sebastian.

Mirandes Preview – Segunda outfit capable of further surprises?

Perhaps in another round, most rounds in fact, a team from Segunda Division knocking out its third consecutive La Liga outfit would have garnered more attention. Instead, Mirandes adding Villarreal to a list of scalps that already included Celta Viga and Sevilla felt as though it went largely unheralded. So much that bookmakers still consider them the least threatening of the remaining four competitors, with current quotes of 20/1 with BetFred about them lifting the trophy significantly bigger than the rest.

Being dismissed before a ball has even been kicked has worked out rather well for them so far. Celta Vigo are embroiled in the relegation battle but both Villarreal and Sevilla are among the better sides in the country, with the latter actually ranked one place higher in the La Liga standings. To oust both, then, was mighty impressive. To do so whilst scoring seven times across the two games especially – though a critical factor on both occasions being the venue.

Mirandes’ upset victories were all on home soil, which is where much of their best work this season has been produced. In the Segunda Division, they lose a lot more often (five of their six defeats coming away) and concede at an alarming rate (more than two-a-game) when not having the comforts of home advantage. Their latest three away encounters returned scorelines of 2-2, 2-2 and 3-3 and contributed to a current run of five straight draws. Although they would likely to settle for more of the same here.

Betting Summary

Real Sociedad are targeting a return to the Champions League for next season, which goes some way to emphasising where this team are at right now. They’re sixth in La Liga for very good reason, because they’re a very good side. Especially at home. Mirandes have performed exceptionally well to reach this far, even more so when taking into account who they needed to beat in order to do so. However, this opening leg in particular seems beyond even them.

Real Sociedad Vs Mirandes – Key Facts:

  • Against stronger opposition, Real Sociedad lost only three times at their Anoeta Stadium during the current La Liga campaign (W6 D2 L3).
  • Five of the six losses Mirandes incurred down in Liga 2 were in away encounters (W3 D5 L5), with 77 per cent of their away matches producing three or more goals.
  • This will be a first meeting between the two clubs since a goalless draw in the 2004/05 Copa del Rey, with Mirandes progressing on penalties.

Having established that Real Sociedad should be winning this leg, we now need to find a bet to bolster their thin odds. Goals have been a regular theme throughout the tournament for both sides. Mirandes’ games – both in this tournament and down in Liga 2 – are averaging a healthy number but particularly those away from home. Real Sociedad & Over 3.5 Goals (3/1 PaddyPower) and Real Sociedad & Both To Score (12/5 Bet365) are worthy of consideration.
