Red Star Belgrade – Serbian champs left with too much to do?

A first ever appearance in the Europa League last sixteen now looks like being a brief one unless last season’s Serbian league and cup winners can find at least three goals in Belgrade. That would appear a very tall order indeed. Red Star Belgrade weren’t exactly prolific during this season’s group stage, mustering a modest six goals on their way to topping Group F ahead of Braga, Midtjylland and Ludogorets.

The Red-Whites do have history for overturning an aggregate deficit, however, doing so on 14 of 35 previous occasions in which they lost the first leg away from home. They are also formidable hosts. Arsenal and Midtjylland being the only visiting teams to prevail in Belgrade in the Europa League in eleven such matches. Meanwhile, that loss in Scotland remains their sole blemish in nine games (W6 D2).

Key Stat: The Serbian outfit had only conceded one goal in their six competitive matches (W5 D1) prior to a 3-0 loss in Scotland to Rangers in the first leg.

Rangers – SPL winners firm favourites for last-eight?

Another stirring performance under the Ibrox lights has put Rangers in touching distance of the Europa League quarter-finals, a feat they’ve never before achieved despite this season marking a fourth appearance at this particular juncture. The scoreline undoubtedly flattered Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, scoring three times from 1.71 xG and somehow preserving their clean sheet in spite of allowing 2.41 xGA.

The Gers subsequently cruised into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday with a 3-0 victory away to Dundee. That marked a fourth successive win in all competitions as well as extending their unbeaten run to 12 matches (W8 D4). Even more impressive, though, is their current seven-game unbeaten streak in Europe (W4 D3). Including that memorable 6-4 aggregate victory over Borussia Dortmund in the last round.

Key Stat: Prior to a memorable 4-2 victory away at Borussia Dortmund in the previous round, Rangers hadn’t won any of five European away games this term (D3 L2).

Red Star Belgrade Vs Rangers Betting Advice

Having already slayed the beast of Dortmund, a visit to Belgrade to defend a commanding 3-0 aggregate advantage should hold no fears for reigning Scottish champions Rangers. Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw his team produce the shock of the entire round of 32 when they went to Signal Iduna Park and won 4-2, and this does appear a less formidable assignment on paper.

Red Star Belgrade Vs Rangers – Key Facts:

  • A 3-0 first-leg defeat in Glasgow halted Red Star Belgrade’s six-match unbeaten run in which they had conceded only one goal. They finished top of UEL Group F with a record of W3 D2 L1.
  • Rangers are unbeaten in 12 games (W8 D4) and have won each of their last four contests without conceding a goal. They finished second in Group A with a record of W2 D2 L2.
  • Both teams averaged exactly one goal per game during this season’s Europa League group stage while conceding less than a goal a game (Red Star 4, Rangers 5).

Red Star Belgrade were incredibly unfortunate to be on the end of such a heavy first-leg defeat, though, seeing two goals chalked off by VAR, a penalty saved and created numerous other openings to score. Moreover, the three they did concede were nearly as many as they shipped across the entire group stage (four). Rangers conceded just five in their six group fixtures, meanwhile, and can happily sit back and soak up pressure.
