Rennes Preview – Clean sheets proving difficult to come by?

It is a short turnaround for Rennes who are back in Ligue 1 action for what is their third competitive match inside seven days. It comes 72 hours after marking their maiden Champions League appearance with a 1-1 draw against Russian side FC Krasnodar at Roazhon Park. No doubt coach Julien Stephan will be keen to see his side avoid another stalemate, having witnessed three in as many matches recently.

There was one notable omission from the Rennes starting XI for last Friday’s fixture away to rock-bottom Dijon, as Stephan elected not to start 17-year-old prodigy Eduardo Camavinga. It was a decision which initially paid off, with Martin Terrier – a £10million summer signing from Lyon – putting them in front midway through the first half. By the time of Camavinga’s introduction, the hosts have drawn level.

To have only drawn away to such lowly opposition would have been hugely frustrating – not least for me after tipping them to win. They were fortunate to escape with a draw, however, losing the Expected Goals battle at Stade Gaston Gerard: DIJ 1.00 – 0.68 REN xG. Meanwhile goals continue to be a regular theme in matches, seeing goals at both ends in seven of eight contests in league and Europe this term.

Angers Preview – Le SCO on the cusp of three straight away losses?

It hasn’t taken long for Angers to settle into familiar territory. We are seven games deep into the 2020-21 Ligue 1 season and Stephane Moulin and his team are already back in eleventh-place, a position they also found themselves in March when the 2019-20 season in France was provisionally suspended before being curtailed altogether. A point or better here and they will climb into the top half ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

A point was precisely what they had to make do with last time out at home to FC Metz. A fair result based on chances created by both sides inside Stade Raymond Kopa: ANG 1.05 – 0.85 MET xG. Both teams would score within moments of each other shortly before half-time, as club captain Thomas Mangani saw his effort quickly cancelled out as Le SCO’s two-game winning streak on home soil was snapped.

The 1-1 scoreline with FC Metz did maintain a trend, however, with Angers’ last four Ligue 1 games seeing them both score as well as conceding. That includes their last two away fixtures, although both their goals were mere consolations in the end as they were handsomely beaten away at Montpellier (4-1) and PSG (6-1). A far cry from their 1-0 victory on Matchday 1 in Dijon.

Rennes Vs Dijon Betting Advice

We can probably forgive Rennes for their lacklustre performance in Dijon a week earlier, in what was a second successive Ligue 1 draw for the Bretons. They delivered a more polished display in midweek meanwhile, even if the end result was ultimately disappointing, held to a 1-1 draw at this same venue by Russian side FC Krasnodar despite being far and away the better side according to xG (2.64 to 1.29).

Rennes Vs Dijon – Key Facts

  • So far this season Rennes have seen all but one of their seven Ligue 1 fixtures feature both teams scoring, including all three staged at Roazhon Park (W2 D1).
  • Each of the last four Ligue 1 games involving Angers has seen both teams score, which includes the last two played away from home (L2).
  • Rennes are targeting a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 home win against Angers, whose last head-to-head win in the league – home or away – came in Ligue 2 in 1993 (D3 L6 since).

Considering Dijon remain bottom of the Ligue 1 table, it is probably wise not to read too much into Angers winning there on the opening weekend. Since then they have accrued two wins in six, both coming at home, losing heavily on two subsequent away outings as they shipped a combined ten goals to Montpellier and PSG. Although the short turnaround is a concern, Rennes are capable of inflicting something similar.
