Rep. Ireland Prediction – Can Rep. Ireland keep going?

Group D surprise package, Republic of Ireland, currently sit top of the 5-nation group with a significant 5-point lead ahead of 2nd placed Denmark and a 6-point cushion over Thursday night’s opponents, Switzerland, as the hosts prepare to resume their Euro 2020 campaign.

The Irish still remain unbeaten so far after playing 4 group matches under coach, Mick McCarthy, as his side have collected 3 wins and 1 draw to date in what has been an enormously successful campaign so far.

Victories against Gibraltar 1-0 away and a 2-0 win on home turf along with a 1-0 home win against Georgia have been complemented by a solid point on their travels when they held Denmark to a 1-1 draw at the Telia Parken in Copenhagen.

Avoiding defeat on Thursday night in Dublin against the visitors, Switzerland, would go a long way to seeing Republic of Ireland qualify for another European Championship, the last being the 2016 tournament in France.

Republic of Ireland are unbeaten in their last 12 European qualifiers at home, and indeed, have lost just 1 of their last 23 matches on home turf at this level, while Sheffield United strike pair, McGoldrick and Robinson should figure here.

Switzerland Prediction – Can Switzerland make up ground?

The Swiss reached the final stages of the recent inaugural Nations League tournament in June but finished in 4th place after drawing 0-0 with England in what was an uneventful match, and eventually losing on penalties.

The visitors haven’t played a competitive match since then, and they come into this important Group D clash having registered just 3 wins out of their last 9 matches in all competitions, so the Swiss may be a little underdone ahead of this encounter in Dublin.

Within this period, Switzerland have suffered 5 defeats to England, Belgium, Qatar, Portugal and England, while their victories included wins against Iceland, Belgium and Georgia. Results have produced a mixed bag of returns on the road for Switzerland though as they’ve managed just 4 wins out of their last 12 away matches in all competitions.

In addition, Switzerland will be without the mercurial Shaqiri due to lack of competitive football time under his belt with Liverpool so far this season, and as the Swiss have managed just 1 win from their previous 6 visits to Dublin, a result for the visitors looks far from guaranteed.
