Rochdale Preview – Can the Dale hit back on home soil?

Rochdale kicked off their League One season with a disappointing away reverse at Swindon Town last weekend. Brian Barry-Murphy’s men were 3-0 down at half time at the County Ground, with Jimmy Keohane’s injury-time goal being no more than a consolation in the 3-1 reverse.

Rochdale followed that up with a 2-0 home defeat to EFL Championship side Sheffield Wednesday last Tuesday. Second-half strikes from Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass gave Garry Monk’s Owls an easy win.

Our betting prediction:
Portsmouth to win to nil

Rochdale started their season with a 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium, which they followed up with a 2-1 win at Morecambe in the Football League Trophy.

Last season, the club from Greater Manchester finished down in 18th place. They were beaten 18 times, drew six games and won only ten. Nevertheless, they ended up four points clear of 21st-place Tranmere Rovers. Can Rochdale avoid a relegation battle this season?

Portsmouth Preview – Pompey to leave Spotland with all three points?

Portsmouth’s 2020-21 League One season started with a 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury Town at Fratton Park last Saturday. Prior to that, Pompey had beaten Stevenage on penalties in the first round of the Carabao Cup and saw off Colchester United in the Football League Trophy.

Portsmouth followed up their league draw with a heavy defeat at Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup second round on Thursday. The Seagulls were far too strong, with Alexis Mac Allister, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Bernardo and Viktor Gyokeres netting in the 4-0 romp.

Portsmouth finished in fifth spot last term, booking their place in the League One play-offs. Kenny Jackett’s men went on to lose to Oxford United in the semi-finals on penalties.

Pompey will be hoping to avoid the play-offs altogether this term and gain promotion to the EFL Championship via the automatic route. Can they pick up their first league win of the new campaign this Sunday?

Rochdale vs Portsmouth Betting Advice

The 2019-20 League One season was cut short, of course, but Portsmouth still had time to thump Rochdale home and away. Ronan Curtis (2) and Ryan Williams were on target in a 3-0 Pompey win at Spotland in November. A few months later, Portsmouth beat Rochdale by the same scoreline at Fratton Park thanks to goals from Williams, Steve Seddon and Christian Burgess.

Key Facts – Rochdale vs Portsmouth Betting Tip

  • Pompey are unbeaten in the previous seven meetings (winning six, drawing one)
  • Portsmouth finished 24 points above Rochdale in League One last term
  • Just Southend United and Tranmere picked up fewer home points than Rochdale last season

Portsmouth have a stunning recent record over Rochdale, winning each of the previous five league and cup meetings. We are backing the Hampshire club to make it six in a row this weekend. You can get the tasty odds of 15/8 for the away team to win -1.

Ronan Curtis was a thorn in the Dale’s side last term, scoring twice at Spotland. The 24-year-old Irishman is available at 9/2 to score first in this one.
