Roger Federer had a very tight squeeze in his third-round match at the Australian Open 2020. He looked for all the world that he wasn’t going to be lining up in the fourth round. But he found a way to get through a dramatic super tie-break.
He lines up against Hungary’s Marton Fuscovics who has already caused a big upset in the tournament by having knocked out world number 13 Denis Shapovalov in the first round. Will he challenge Federer?

Does Fuscovics have another big underdog success story in him?
Marton Fuscovics pulled out a shock win in the first round of action at Melbourne Park, taking a 3-1 win over 13th seed Denis Shapovavlov. He has not skipped a beat since then, powering his way past Jannik Sinner and Tommy Paul with a straight-sets victories. Of course, the level of opposition is going to go up massively in this one against Federer.
27-year-old Fuscovics is only in the Australian Open main draw for the third time in her career. He has now matched his fourth-round berth of 2018 on his debut, the stage at which he bowed out. In none of his appearances across the other Slams (nine in total) has he been past the second round. So he is the big underdog for this fourth round clash, but will he be able to take advantage of the fact that Federer was involved in such a long match in the third round?
Should punters worry about Federer’s third-round epic?
Roger Federer had eased through the first two rounds of action at Melbourne Park this year without having dropped a set. Then he took on Australia’s John Millman in the third round and had his back to the wall. After dropping the first set, Federer hit back winning the next two. But he couldn’t close out the deal in third.

The match went to a super tie-break in the final set (first to 10 points) and at 4-8 down in that tiebreaker, Federer looked as if he was about to suffer a shock exit. But somehow, partly through Millman completely losing focus at the wrong time with the finish line in sight, Federer rattled off six points in a row to win the match. It was well over four hours on the court for him though and he was stacking up the unforced errors.
Roger Federer vs Marton Fucsovics Betting Advice
You would still not put it past Roger Federer coming back after an exhausting match in high humidity and sauntering to get a 3-0 set success. He just wasn’t anywhere near as fluent in that match against Millman as he had been in the first couple of rounds. The thing to take into consideration is that Millman has rattled Federer before.
Key Facts – Roger Federer vs Marton Fucsovics Betting Tip
- Roger Federer is ranked 3rd in the world
- Roger Federer has won the two previous meetings, one of them at the 2018 Australian Open
- Marton Fuscovics knocked out top 20 player Denis Shapovalov in the first round
Fuscovics really doesn’t look to be that big of a threat to Federer in this match. His Grand Slam record is poor. The Hungarian may well fail to get a set on the board in this contest. Federer for sure, after those unforced errors in his last match, probably be more dialled in after such a massive scare.
