Remarkably Roger Federer stands in the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2020. In two of the last three rounds, he has been on the break of an exit but has miraculously survived against the odds.

Now comes the toughest challenge of all. He will be lining up against the reigning Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic. The progress to the final four has been a lot more serene for the Serbian.

Djokovic can put an end to Federer’s campaign

Novak Djokovic, who has won six of the last nine editions of the Australian Open is through to the final four having only dropped one set. That one set that he conceded was in the opening round of the tournament and was merely a small blot on his copybook.

In the quarter-finals, he was lined up against Canada’s Milos Raonic. The defence of Djokovic against the massive service game of Raonic was remarkable. Djokovic simply took the match away from his opponent thanks to some tremendously athletic returns.

Djokovic got through in straight sets, wrapping up the third in a 7-1 tiebreak success. He is the master of the Melbourne courts and it’s tough to picture a scenario in which he doesn’t make it through to the final. He is eyeing up his eighth Australian Open title.

Djokovic has won four of the last six Grand Slam tournaments on offer. There is so much history between Djokovic and Federer. The Serbian leads the head to head by a narrow 26-23.

Their most recent meeting was at the Nitto ATP Finals at the end of last year which Federer won. But Djokovic had wrapped up four success on the bounce against Federer prior to that.

Their last meeting at the Australian Open was in the 2016 semi finals, a match which Djokoiciv won in four sets. Djokovic is 3-1 in the head to head of Australian Open meetings.

Somehow Federer survives

In his third-round match against John Millman, Federer was 8-4 down in a super-tie break at the end of the fifth set. Somehow, thanks to some brilliance and partly because of his opponent not handling the pressure well with the finish line in sight, Federer survived.

Then Federer dropped the first set of his fourth round contest against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, but the 20-time Slam champion got better as the match wore on. He was up against world number 100 Tennys Sandgren in the quarter-finals and once more Federer had his survival hanging on the line.

A 2-1 sets up, Sandgren had three match points in the fourth set on Federer’s serve. The American missed his chance through unforced errors. That fourth set went to a tie-break and Sandgren had another four match points, but again unforced errors in such a high-pressure situation failed him and Federer survived again.

In his match against Sandgren, Federer did have to have a medical time out for a groin problem. The thing to consider here is that all of his matches at the Australian Open have been against unseeded players. So while the draw has been kind to him, struggles with dips in form have really pushed Federer to the limit.

Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic Betting Advice

Federer has made a lot of uncharacterized unforced errors through this campaign. He has been let off the hook massively by Millman and Sandgren in the tournament.

Key Facts – Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic Betting Tip

  • Roger Federer survived seven match points in the quarter-finals
  • Novak Djokovic leads the head to head 26-23
  • Novak Djokovic has won 6 of the last 9 Australian Open titles

There is no way that Djokovic is going to be as forgiving against Federer as anyone else has been in Melbourne. In fact, given those defensive frailties that Federer has shown, a 3-0 win for the reigning champion Djokovic looks a very sound proposition as they meet for the 50th time.
