Although Roma hold home advantage at their Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night in this second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, they’ll be facing a mountain to climb if they’re to make it through to the semi-finals as they trail visitors, Barcelona 4-1 following last week’s first leg defeat.
The heavy defeat in Barcelona last week has virtually put paid to Roma’s aspirations of progressing any further in this competition, barring a miraculous comeback, and having lost 2-0 at home to Fiorentina in Serie A on the weekend, Tuesday night’s hosts may not be in the most confident of moods.
Roma have won their last three Champions League ties on the trot at home, and all to nil, as they’ve accounted for Chelsea 3-0, Qarabag 1-0 and Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0, but they face the possible competition winners tonight.
Onto Barcelona, and they don’t need to go forward with any kind of real urgency in this second leg following last week’s thrashing of Roma, and they may well opt to just hit Roma on the break here as the Italian outfit desperately try to claw their way back into this tie.
Barcelona have won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions overall, and they’re a hard nut to crack at this level as they come into this second leg with a 10 match unbeaten run under their belts, while they’re unbeaten in their last four on their travels.
Barca have also won three of the last five meetings between these two sides, and as Roma try to attempt to reduce the deficit in this second leg, I believe the visitors will just pick them off on the break.
