Roma Preview

It would be an understatement to say that this season has not went to plan for Roma who would have been hoping to kick on from what was a very productive campaign last time around. That was Eusebio Di Francesco’s maiden season in charge of the club and he led them to within a game of the Champions League final and third place in the league which – considering the turnover in players the previous summer – was more than adequate. It also provided the supporters and the club as a whole with the hope that they could move forward and creep closer to champions Juventus, at the same time as maintaining their European performance. It was a bust from the outset, however, as although Roma qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League it was a fleeting appearance in the knockout stages and there have been a number of games and results this season which have simply been unacceptable. The club acted and relieved Di Francesco of his duties following their Champions League elimination, replacing him with Claudio Ranieri who returns for a second spell in charge, nearly 10 years after the first. Sunday’s game also pits the new boss against one of his old teams having managed in Naples in the early 90s. It’s one win and one loss so far since his return and need another three points in this clash to begin narrowing the four-point gap between themselves and Milan in fourth.

Key-Facts – Roma v Napoli

  • Napoli look to have secured second spot whilst Roma have a fight on their hands to climb into the top four
  • This matches pits the joint third highest scorers in Serie A, with both teams scoring 52 times so far this season
  • Roma’s league games average the second most for goals and seven of their last eight matches have went over 2.5 goals

Napoli Preview

The gap between Napoli and leaders Juventus may be more than Carlo Ancelotti would have expected and certainly hoped at this stage of the season, but there’s no real questioning that Napoli are in the position that they should be, which is second. Maurizo Sarri’s team came close in the past couple of years to winning the title without being able to see it all the way through but Ancelotti is going to take some time to get the team the way he wants it and with a seven point cushion between themselves and third place Inter is a positive sign that they are very much still the best of the rest. The club also have a mouth-watering clash with Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Europa League to come, a competition that presents them with their last chance of silverware this season. In terms of Serie A, it’s about finishing off as strongly as possible, cutting the gap to Juventus where possible and maintaining second. Their form of late has been inconsistent at best with two wins, three draws and a loss in their last six games. With the exception of this game and a clash with Inter in May, it’s relatively kind run-in for Napoli and one they’ll be looking to take advantage of.

Roma v Napoli Betting Advice

There’s a 13-point gap between Roma and Napoli which is as good an indicator as there is in terms of measuring how both teams have got on this season. Roma have a decidedly difficult finish to the season which will make a top four finish all that more difficult. Sunday’s game is going to be a massive test for them against a Napoli team who, although not in great form, are certainly favoured going into this one and more than capable of winning in the Olimpico.

It’s been a struggle for Roma and they have underperformed this season but they have lost only once at home all season so they know how to get the job done in their own patch. Napoli are certainly not as good on their travels as they are at home, and have won just one of their last five away matches in Serie A. Games involving Roma this season have the second highest average goals in the league whilst Napoli’s goal average is well above 2.5. Seven of Roma’s last eight league games have went over 2.5 and this looks set to be another high-scoring encounter.
