Champions League Tips

Tuesday 27th November 2000hrs Roma v Real Madrid Football – Europe – Champions League We’re nearing the end of the Champions League group stages and across the competition there is still plenty to be decided. Group G is one of the exceptions to that, really, with both of these teams looking very likely to make it through, but we all know the importance of finishing top of the group and that could well be decided in Rome on Tuesday evening. Neither have enjoyed their domestic campaigns to date so will be looking to the Champions League for some relief. Continue reading for a match preview of Roma against Real Madrid with a selected best betting tip.

Roma reached the semi final stage of last season’s Champions League which was a tremendous achievement considering it was Eusebio Di Francesco’s first year in charge of the club. There has been a big turnover in players during the past couple of seasons as well as the Italians attempt to reshape their whole transfer policy, relying on younger players to develop them and no doubt sell them on for big profits. Because of that, change, however, we know there is going to be periods of inconsistent form and we’re seeing that this season – more so domestically. They currently sit seventh in Serie A, a full 18 points off the leaders Juventus. Now, we know that Juve are cantering towards another league title but Roma have to be more competitive than they have been thus far. Saturday’s defeat away to Udinese was their fourth in the league already and they are in danger of falling out the race for the top four and qualifying for next season’s Champions League unless they improve. In Europe, though, it’s been very good with three wins out their four group games. Their only defeat came in this competition came on match day one in the Bernabeu – can they get revenge?

Real Madrid have not had their troubles to see this season and we could probably have expected them to suffer a reaction to losing not only their best and most important player in Cristiano Ronaldo, but also with the departure of Zinedine Zidane who enjoyed so much success. His replacement has already been replaced with Julen Lopetegui being sacked following a pretty dismal start to the season and his successor, Santiago Solari is already facing up to the realities of the job. Despite having made the best start of any manager in their illustrious history and subsequently getting the job on a permanent basis, his honeymoon period has not lasted long with a damaging 3-0 loss away to Eibar at the weekend. It brought an end to a four game winning run and caused them to slip further behind in the race for La Liga. Like Roma, however, they have been able to pick up points in the Champions League to ensure they are in a good position to reach the next stage. Their only blot came away to CSKA Moscow but because of their head to head record against tomorrow’s opponent they sit on top of the section and will be looking to stay there.

Roma v Real Madrid Betting Tip

Real Madrid proved far too good for Roma when these teams met in the middle of September and for both – especially the current Champions League holders – it will have felt so long ago. There has been plenty happening in between and a lot of it has been to the detriment of the two clubs in domestic matters. It’s all about European action this midweek, though, and whilst there are several permutations which could see Roma and Real qualify tomorrow, their only concern will be getting the win. A win for either would virtually seal top spot and, in theory, give them a more favourable draw in the knockout phase.

Due to the earlier kick off in the other game in this group, we could have a situation whereby the teams know their fate but it remains an attractive game in proposition. The hosts will be looking to show that they are much better than they showed when losing 3-0 in Spain and their form at home in Europe is significantly better so we should expect an improved display. For Real it will be interesting to see how they react having been so poor at the weekend against Eibar, especially with it being Solari’s first defeat. The clubs have both scored 10 goals so far in the group stage and I fancy they’ll be adding to those tallies on Tuesday. Roma’s last four home games in the Champions League have had over 2.5 goals and 12 Real Madrid’s last 14 matches in the Champions League have had the same fate. It looks another solid wager in this one.
