Preview: Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt appear well placed to continue their fairytale adventure in Europe. Kjetil Knutsen’s men are taking a 2-1 aggregate lead over to Rome. Therefore a result similar to the 2-2 scoreline recorded here during the pair’s group stage duels would see the Nordic outfit safely through to the competition’s last four.

Roma – Can Mourinho finally solve his Norwegian puzzle?

With a 2-2 draw here in Rome last November the highlight – and I use that term loosely – of three meetings this season with Bodo/Glimt, will it be a case of fourth time lucky for Roma? Jose Mourinho’s men boast wins against three of four teams faced in Europa Conference League action. However they have gotten little change out of the Norwegian champions, despite the Italians topping a group that included both teams.

That first-leg reverse represents the Giallorossi’s sole loss across the last eleven competitive matches, and among only three occasions in their last nine which they didn’t win (D2 L1). So it wasn’t as though the result in northern Norway could be attributed to any lack of form. And if anyone was expecting home advantage to prove decisive, it is worth noting Roma were held (1-1) as hosts in the last round by Vitesse.

Key Stat: Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk remain the only visiting team not to score against Roma in the UEFA Europa Conference League this season. CSKA Sofia and Vitesse managed one each, in a 5-1 defeat and 1-1 draw respectively, while Bodo/Glimt netted twice in a 2-2 draw.

Bodo/Glimt – Free-scoring Norwegian champs not done yet?

Carrying the flag for Norway in Europe this season are Kjetil Knutsen and his remarkable Bodo/Glimt outfit. A touch unfortunate not to finish atop their group, going unbeaten with three home wins and three away draws, the two-time reigning national champions then produced a masterclass in finishing to score nine across two-legged ties against Celtic (1-3a, 2-0h) and AZ Alkmaar (2-1h, 2-2a aet).

That brought their tournament tally thus far to 25 – more than any other team – in ten matches. Meanwhile, in addition to that first-leg result preserving the club’s perfect home record of nine wins from nine in this very competition, it gives them belief they can extend a 14-strong away run without defeat in Europe. Among countless impressive showings on their travels being last November’s 2-2 draw at this very venue.

Key Stat: The Norwegians are still to suffer an away defeat in this season’s UEFA Europa Conference League (W1 D4), scoring in all but one of five away encounters from group stage to knockout rounds.

Roma Vs Bodo/Glimt Betting Advice

As short as 1/3 to win inside 90 minutes, there are plenty more appealing than a wager on a Roma side seeking its first victory over their opponents at the fourth attempt. In fact, at bigger than 2/1 to merely avoid defeat, there is a strong case to put Bodo/Glimt up as the selection. After all, the Norwegians are unbeaten in 14 consecutive European away games. Chief among them November’s 2-2 draw at this venue.

Roma Vs Bodo/Glimt – Key Facts:

  • The teams are contesting their fourth head-to-head of the season. Both meetings in Norway produced home wins for Bodo/Glimt, including that astonishing 6-1 scoreline in the group stage, while their contest in Rome ended in a 2-2 draw.
  • Roma boast six wins across their past nine matches (D2 L1), but their sole loss in 11 came in the first-leg, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat courtesy of Hugo Vetlesen’s winner for the hosts struck in the 89th minute.
  • The task is unlikely to be any easier in Rome for Jose Mourinho’s Roma. This is because Bodo/Glimt bring a 14-game unbeaten away record in European competition to the Stadio Olimpico.

As hosts, Roma failed to retain their clean sheet in four of the last ten matches at Stadio Olimpico. During the UECL group stage, CSKA Sofia and Vitesse scored one apiece at this ground. Opponents Bodo/Glimt, meanwhile, managed two and very nearly came away with a famous win before settling for a 2-2 draw. Bearing all this in mind, I am pleasantly surprised we can get close to even money about both teams scoring.
