Italian Serie A
Pick: Roma Win & Over 2.5 Goals
Odds: 10/11

Preview: Roma have prevailed 14 of the last 15 times they have taken on Genoa in Rome, so are unsurprisingly the bookies favourites to extend the latter’s long winless run by earning all three points for the third Serie A outing in succession.

Roma – Giallorossi gaining steam on the top four?

The Giallorossi gave us quite the scare before the break, racing into a 4-0 half-time lead away to Empoli. Fortunately they would ease off in the second, allowing the hosts to halve the deficit and us to collect an ‘Over 2.5 Goals & BTTS’ winner. It is a bet which has now landed in four of Roma’s last six Serie A matches, Jose Mourinho’s men remaining as scintillating in attack as they are porous at the back.

Having also progressed safely into the last four of the Coppa Italia with victory over Lecce, that is now three wins on the trot for the Rome based side. More importantly, they have closed to within five points of the top four – and with a reasonable upcoming schedule that sees them take on Sassuolo, Hellas Verona and Spezia following the visit of Genoa, the potential is certainly there for this team to go on a serious run.

Key Stat: Roma may have only recorded one clean sheet across their six previous Serie A matches but their last five league victories at the Stadio Olimpico (versus Cagliari, Empoli, Spezia, Torino and Udinese) were all ‘to nil’.

Genoa – Sinking Grifone must find a cutting edge?

Not since 2006/07 has the club sampled football from the confines of Serie B. It is a bleak prospect that is fast becoming reality unless their latest gamble pays off. After the failed experiment that was appointing former AC Milan legend Andriy Shevchenko as coach, ‘Il Grifone’ are placing a huge amount of faith in someone whose CV comprises a short stint in Belgium at KV Oostende.

Alexander Blessin’s first game in the dugout didn’t end with a first league win since September but did see them earn a third point in five matches (D3 L2) with a goalless draw at home to Udinese. It really should have been more, though, as the league’s second lowest scorers contrived to miss several gilt-edged opportunities. It leaves them without a Serie A victory in their past 20 attempts (D10 L10).

Key Stat: Genoa have won one match in Serie A all season, 3-2 away to Cagliari in September, but more worryingly is their lack of goals. Following last week’s blank at home to Udinese, Il Grifone have failed to score in nine of the last 13 league games.

Roma Vs Genoa Betting Advice

These are desperate times at Genoa, who remain five points adrift of safety after last week’s 0-0 draw home to Udinese. It was an encouraging performance under a new coach, creating two chances deemed ‘big’ in a dominant display. Yet that is now three goals scored across their last eleven league fixtures, and none at all in the last three. Roma’s last five home wins in Serie A, meanwhile, were all to nil.

Roma Vs Genoa – Key Facts:

  • All but one of the past 15 Serie A meetings at the Stadio Olimpico went the way of the home side, though last season’s 1-0 victory for Roma marked the first such meeting which didn’t see Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score land.
  • After recent wins over Cagliari and Empoli, Roma are looking to win three league games in a row for only the third occasion this season.
  • Genoa can only dream of such a run. The visitors are currently 20 games into a winless league run which stretches back to the middle of September.

At 11/8, I am not sure I could place much trust in a Roma backline which has been breached in five of the last six league games. Four of these saw three or more goals as well as both team scoring, a bet that looks enticing at 13/10. It requires a leap of faith, of course, as Genoa’s profligacy this term is there for all to see. However, Genoa did look more threatening last time out, while this Roma defence always gives you a chance.
