Roma – Olimpico backdrop could prove decisive?

Arguably the biggest beneficiaries from a dramatic midweek in Serie A, in which all of AC Milan, Inter and Napoli sustained defeats, were Roma (W10 D3 L3), who continue to go under the radar despite a fifth win in six games last time out in Crotone. Now, following a routine 3-1 victory over the side currently bottom of the standings, the Giallorossi are four points off the summit ahead of their clash with third place Inter Milan.

According to Infogol’s Expected Goals table, Roma have been the best team in the league so far this term, averaging 2.3 xGF and 1 xGA. Those figures are even better at home, 2.8 xGF and 0.8 xGA. This bears out in their record when playing at the Olimpico this season: six wins, two draws. They are the only team in Serie A still to lose a home game in 2020/21, though they have benefited from a kind set of fixtures.

Aside from Juventus, who they drew 2-2 with on Matchday 2, Roma have largely avoided playing last season’s top-seven in Rome. This has helped Paulo Fonseca’s charges put up league leading figures for points-per-game (2.50) and goals conceded (7) across their eight home encounters. However, victory on Sunday would see them register four straight league wins at home for the first time since December 2019.

Inter Milan – Conte’s men riled up following Samp loss?

For Antonio Conte and Inter (W11 D3 L2) to fare any better than last season, results like those on Wednesday at the Luigi Ferraris have to be eradicated. Too many inexplicable points dropped proved their downfall last time around. They have largely kept those to a minimum thus far, but to have lost a game they did more than enough to win will have been incredibly difficult to comprehend for Conte.

Inter losing 2-1 away to Sampdoria was made all the more galling once news filtered through that Serie A leaders AC Milan had lost for the first time all season. What’s more is that the Nerazzurri would have climbed above their Milanese rivals with victory. Even if they had salvaged a point, it would have seemed harsh after comfortably winning the xG battle: SAM 1.25 – 2.61 INT.

Much of the blame falls at the feet of forwards Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez, the latter deputising for Romelu Lukaku who was handed a breather on the bench. Expect the Belgian, who trails only Ronaldo in the Serie A scoring charts with 12, to feature from the start on Sunday as Inter seek a brisk return to winning ways having reeled off eight consecutive victories prior to a rare profligate display in midweek.

Roma Vs Inter Milan Betting Advice

Seven points separate the top four in Italy. AS Roma and Inter Milan form part of this collective, making Sunday’s clash at Stadio Olimpico important for all parties concerned. Nobody really expects Roma to maintain this pace over the course of the whole season. However their home record is imperious, winning six and drawing twice, that any improvement on the road (W4 D1 L3) would strengthen their case as possible Scudetto dark horses.

Roma Vs Inter Milan – Key Facts:

  • With six wins and two draws, Roma are the only team in Serie A yet to lose a home match in 2020/21. They also boast the joint-strongest home defence.
  • Only leaders AC Milan have earned more points away from home this season than Inter Milan, netting in all eight away fixtures (W5 D2 L1).
  • All of the past five Serie A head-to-head encounters ended in a draw. The previous two held in Rome finished 2-2, while both teams have scored in each of the last six here.

Inter saw their eight-game winning streak snapped earlier in the week, losing 2-1 at Sampdoria, but it wasn’t as though they had a bad night at the office. More that Romelu Lukaku’s absence was keenly felt as the forwards contrived to score once from 2.61 xG. It was a rare profligate showing from the most prolific side in Serie A (41 goals from 16 matches). Meanwhile, five of the past six meetings in Rome have seen at least three goals as well as both teams scoring.
