Preview: It’s undoubtedly the most exciting match-up in prospect in Serie A this weekend. A fixture not lacking on the goal front last season, as the away sides took home the spoils on both occasions. Yet, historically, this is a nightmare fixture for Juventus, who have only won on one of their most recent six visits to the Stadio Olimpico against Roma.

AS Roma Preview – Turbulent week really needs a positive conclusion?

The Romans finished 2019/20 with a power surge, winning seven whilst losing none of their final eight Serie A matches to close out a disrupted league campaign in a Europa League berth. That this improved form wasn’t enough to finish inside the Champions League places was a big blow for the club who, after finishing no lower than third between 2013/14 and 2017/18, have now missed out two seasons running.

It seems self-explanatory what the objective for the season ahead is. Roma would make an inauspicious start to 2020/21, though, after being held to a goalless draw in Verona (VER 0.6 – 2.0 ROM). Head coach Paulo Fonseca handed several debuts to some of the club’s summer recruits, notably to Jordan Veretout, Gianluca Mancini and former Barca and Chelsea winger Pedro, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan spearheaded the attack.

Fortunately for them, it appears last season’s top scorer, Edin Dzeko, is set for a return to the starting line-up following a summer of uncertainty regarding his future. It’s about the only positive right now, at the end of a week in which an opening round draw, which could so easily have been a win, has since become a 3-0 loss. Roma swiftly punished for fielding an eligible player in the goalless encounter.

Juventus Preview – Perfect performance on Pirlo’s dugout bow?

So, after all the uncertainty and guesswork that went into predicting how Juventus would perform under the criminally inexperienced Andrea Pirlo, it turns out they can play pretty good after all. What might have been a tricky opening assignment, facing a Sampdoria side that has undoubtedly improved under former Bianconeri boss Claudio Ranieri, was made to look like a cakewalk after a very accomplished display.

Juventus were dominant in every facet of the game against Sampdoria (JUV 2.14 – 0.79 SAM). The visitors surprisingly passive and, if we’re being brutally honest, simply too submissive in Turin. Instead, their first away encounter is possibly where we will get most of our answers as to how ready this team are to defend their crown during the season ahead. A season which is set to be more competitive than any in recent memory.

Towards the end of last season, it was clear The Old Lady eased off once a ninth straight league title was all but confirmed. However, not every result could be dismissed as them being on the beach. Not least the 4-2 reverse at the San Siro to AC Milan eight games from the end. The first of four away fixtures Juve would come up short in, subsequently failing to win in Sassuolo (3-3), Udinese (2-1) and Cagliari (2-0).

Roma Vs Juventus Betting Advice

It is dangerous reading too far into the form Juventus produced over the closing stages of last season’s league campaign, at a time when they had clearly eased up with a view to keeping some gas in the tank for the Champions League (which, as it so happens, never got going after losing straight away to Lyon). Even so, Juve head to Rome – which is never an easy place to visit – winless in four away Serie A games (D1 L3).

Roma Vs Juventus – Key Facts

  • One loss in their last seven home Serie A games for Roma, whose sole defeat in this sequence (0-2 Udinese) was the only occasion the Giallorossi had failed to net at least twice.
  • Juventus suffered more losses in their final four away fixtures of last season (3) than across their previous 15 away fixtures (W16 D1 L3).
  • A 2-1 victory at the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A last season marked a first away win for Juventus over AS Roma for six seasons (W1 D2 L3).

This relatively new-look Juve certainly passed the eye test first time around. Although bigger and bolder opponents than Sampdoria await, beginning with a Roma team brimming with creativity and goal potential. All three meetings in 2019/20 (two in the league and one in the cup) produced Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score, which looks to have solid claims once more. 2-1 Juventus.
