Roma Preview – Will Fonseca’s Roma secure vital home win to keep on the heels of top four?

It’s going to have to be a near flawless finish for Roma if they are to qualify for the Champions League. Currently six points behind Atalanta, the team from the capital have a lot to do courtesy of a very disappointing spell before Serie A shutdown. Paulo Fonseca’s men lost five of their last nine league games to gift ascendancy to their rivals.

Of course, it’s even harder to take due to Lazio powering ahead with Juventus at the top of Serie A and looking for their first title in 20 years.

Where Roma definitely have to improve is their form at home. Traditionally very strong at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma lost three in four and have taken just four points from a possible 15. Their next four at home are all against teams below them in the table and are games where they will be expected to pick up points.

Only Atalanta have conceded more goals at home out of the top nine clubs than Roma which indicates exactly where they need to improve. Unlike their top four rivals, they have nowhere near the same threat going forward, scoring 11 goals fewer.

Sampdoria Preview – Can Ranieri return to Rome and find vital points for Samp’s relegation fight?

Claurdio Ranieri has been an inspired appointment for Sampdoria lifting them off bottom spot and outside of the relegation zone. However, they remain just one point above the bottom three and have to continue picking up victories as the battle to avoid the drop in Italy is one of the most competitive in Europe.

It was always going to be a very difficult return to football for Ranieri and his players considering they had to travel to Inter at the weekend followed by this visit to Rome. Sampdoria equipped themselves well at the San Siro but ultimately left with nothing.

Whilst anything they get from this game would be a seen as a bonus, Samp have shown improvement on their travels – drawing with AC Milan and beating both Genoa and Torino shortly before the break. They have also scored in six of their last seven away league games.

The evergreen Fabio Quagliarella is going to be pivotal to Sampdoria’s hopes of surviving. Already on nine goals for the season, the former Italian internationalist will be tested with playing two games a week at his age (37) but he’s easily their biggest threat having scored over 50 goals since the start of the 2017/18 season.

Roma vs Sampdoria Betting Advice

Ranieri was in charge of Roma for the last couple of months of the previous campaign and this will be his first return since leaving. He’ll be well aware of the challenge Roma pose his team but there will be some confidence that Samp can cause their hosts problem.

Roma have kept only two clean sheets at home in the league all season and with their visitors now showing more threat on their travels, there will be hopeful of making chances on Wednesday.

Key Facts – Roma vs Sampdoria Betting Tip

    • A 4-0 win over Lecce in February is Roma’s only league win in their last five home matches
    • Sampdoria have scored in six of their last seven away games – winning three of them
    • The teams could not be separated when meeting earlier in the season, playing out a goalless draw

It may have been a goalless draw the last time the teams met but this game should feature goals for the reasons outlined above. Nine of Roma’s last 11 matches have ended with both teams scoring whilst the same has occurred in seven of Sampdoria’s last eight in the league.
