Roma Preview – Are Roma set to continue their impressive start under Mourinho?
The appointment of Jose Mourinho to replace Paulo Fonseca in the Italian capital was a big surprise when announced. Mourinho – who had such a successful spell in Serie A when with Inter Milan back in 2009/10 – has not enjoyed the most productive time at either Tottenham or Manchester United in recent years. There have been questions whether or not he’s able to compete at the top level these days but the early evidence at Roma is encouraging.
A seventh place finish under Fonseca last season was not good enough and there’s no doubt that Roma are looking towards challenging for the top four and Champions League qualification at the very least this time around. They are one of five teams to have taken maximum points from their first two games – scoring seven goals in the process
Critics will point to the fact they have faced limited opposition in the shape of Fiorentina and Salernitana – beating those rivals 3-1 and 4-0 respectively. Tougher challenges undoubted lie ahead starting with this game but the manner of their performances is the biggest positive.
A key part of those performances has been Tammy Abraham. Signed for 40 million euros, the former Chelsea man has already scored his first goal but it’s his all round game which has been the most impressive. He had big shoes to fill replacing Edin Dzeko but already looks like a shrewd signing.
Sassuolo Preview – Can Sassuolo make history with a first away win against Roma?
The price you pay for success as a smaller club is that the personnel responsible for that success tend to be enticed away by those with bigger resources. That’s been the case at Sassuolo who have waved goodbye to Roberto De Zerbi after three years in charge – he’s moved to Shakhtar Dontesk. Brazilian centre half Marlon has moved with him.
Fresh from winning Serie B with Empoli, Alessio Dionisi has taken over as head coach and he’s gotten off to a really positive start with Sass taking four points from their first two games. A 3-2 win away to Verona was followed by a rare goalless draw against Sampdoria last time out.

The eighth place finish from last season will be the aim but Serie A looks the most competitive it has done for a while this campaign.
Somewhat surprisingly Sassuolo have kept hold of their key attacking players. Jeremie Boga, Giacomo Raspadori and Domenico Berardi are full of intent and dynamism. There was plenty of speculation surrounding their futures during the transfer window but all three remain.
