Group A is up next with an intriguing fixture between Romania and Switzerland with Romania desperate to make up ground following their opening group match defeat to France 2-1.
Romania were not without their chances of causing an upset against the hosts who looked vulnerable at times against the pace of Andone, Stancu and Popa, and their reward duly came from the penalty spot following a reckless and impetuous challenge in the box from Patrice Evra.
Romania brought a solid run of form into the Euro 2016 finals as they’d lost just once in their previous 20 matches in all competitions, and given they were capable of causing the French a few problems in the final third, then they should also trouble a shakier Swiss defence tonight.
Onto Switzerland, and they are joint leaders of Group A with hosts France following their 1-0 opening group win over Albania, but it was anything but plain sailing for the Swiss who looked uncomfortable when clearing their lines.
Although Switzerland created plenty of goalscoring opportunities, their finishing was pretty poor with midfelder Dzemaili and forward Seferovic the main culprits, but the likes of Xhaka, Mehmedi and Shaqiri should ensure the chances in front of goal continue against the Romanians.
Honours have been pretty even over the past few years in encounters between these two sides with Romania winning twice, Switzerland three wins and two draws.
Romania need to chase the game in order to capture all three much-needed points, and Switzerland’s defence certainly doesn’t look up to keeping another clean sheet, surely?
