Romania Preview – Will Romania put a disappointing couple of results behind them to remain on contention for top spot?
A week is a long time in football and for Romania it’s been an excruciating one. They were coming into the international break with big hopes both in terms of strengthening their position in the Nations League where they were unbeaten, and progress to the final of the Euro 2020 playoff following their strong performance in the previous Nations League campaign. Defeat away to Iceland means they won’t be playing in next summer’s Championships and a heavy defeat away to Norway at the weekend has put the them back into third place.
Mirel Radoi will have been well aware that both games were again very strong opposition so will try to ensure his players are not too despondent as he nears completion of his first year in the job.
Austria Preview – Are Austria set to get revenge for only defeat of their campaign so far?
One team who will be playing in Euro 2020 is Austria following their second place finish in qualifying and they continue to maintain their place as one of the most promising teams in European international football. Franco Foda will celebrate three years in charge of the national team next month and he can be proud of what his players have achieved in that time. He has rejuvenated the squad following their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Sunday’s 1-0 win away to Northern Ireland is another impressive win and backed up their 2-1 friendly success against Greece a few days before. It was the results that Foda would have been hoping for after the defeat to Romania last month.

The standout result for Austria in this group ins undoubtedly the the 2-1 win away to high-flying Norway. That was their first game in this group and the difference which sees them top of the table at the halfway stage. Another win here would put them in a very strong position heading into next month’s matches which includes a home game against the Norwegians.
Many of this squad of players are hitting the peak ages of their careers and they’ll want to head into next summer’s Euro’s in the best possible form.
Romania vs Austria Betting Advice
If this game is anything like the first meeting in the group then we should be in for a treat. There’s good reason to expect that will be the case, too. Romania know that anything less than a win will virtually put them out of contention for top place whilst Austria will be attempting to keep ahead of not only this rival, but perhaps more importantly Norway who face Northern Ireland at home and will be expecting the win.
A win for the visitors would see them record a third straight away victory for the first time in five years but face a test against a Romanian team who have lost only three of their last 18 home games.
Key Facts – Romania vs Austria Betting Tip
- Romania have lost only three of their last 18 home games, winning 10 of them
- Austria are looking to win three straight away games for the first time in five years
- Romania were very impressive when winning in Austria at the beginning of last month
Despite the neutral part of me hoping for goals I think the recent trends suggest this could be close. Seven of Romania’s last 10 home games have finished with under 2.5 goals, and the same in four of Austria’s last five away matches.
