Preview: First goes to fourth in Group B3. Finland are no doubt keen on preserving their advantage when they pay Romania, whom they have never beaten before despite this set to be their 12th encounter, and the Stadio Giulesti, in Bucharest, a visit.

Romania – Tricolor underachieving in this section?

Despite holding the highest FIFA ranking in their group, Romania sit bottom through two rounds having lost both matches so far in Group B3. The fact they are yet to so much as score means is surprising in itself. They’ve now lost ‘to nil’ in four of the past six completed matches in this competition, and in three out of four fixtures in 2022 – failing to find any way past the defences of Bosnia, Greece and Montenegro.

The good news, then, is that their next opponents have been rather more obliging for them. In 11 prior head-to-heads Romania would never fail to score, netting two or more on seven occasions, and only twice failed to win. Whether this is still the case after Saturday, with confidence clearly at a low ebb, remains to be seen. Thought their record as hosts, with five wins in their last nine (W5 D1 L3), does stand up to scrutiny.

Key Stat: No more than one team has scored in six of the last seven matches involving Romania. The exception a 2-2 draw away to Israel in a friendly earlier this year.

Finland – Momentum with the Eagle-Owls?

The form of the Finns has caught the eye. Markku Kanerva’s side have four points from their Nations League matches so far, assuming the early lead in Group B3 after following a 1-1 draw against Bosnia with a 2-0 win over Montenegro. Both games were in Helsinki, however, while neither were against the highest ranked side in their section. That being Romania, whom they’ve never beaten before in eleven attempts (D3 L8).

Having won their past two away fixtures though – as many as they had managed across seven previous said matches (D1 L4) – could this be the moment when they set the record straight? Admittedly one of those away wins was in Kazakhstan, the other Bosnia. Furthermore, it is still just one win in their last five (D2 L2), scoring only twice in the four games prior to Tuesday’s fairly routine victory over Montenegro.

Key Stat: Each of the last five matches for Finland has seen exactly two goals, with these games seeing scorelines of either 2-0 (three times) or 1-1 (twice).

Romania Vs Finland Betting Advice

Predicting the outcome of this contest essentially boils down to whether you prefer form over history. Finland have undoubtedly made the brighter start to this season’s UEFA Nations League, and can consider themselves extremely unfortunate not to have beaten Bosnia, who equalised in the dying seconds, before easing to a 2-0 success against Montenegro. Conversely, Romania lost ‘to nil’ to both those sides.

Romania Vs Finland – Key Facts:

  • With four points from their pair of Nations League Group B3 fixtures so far, Finland sit top of the group. Meanwhile, Romania occupy last place and are still searching for their first points of the campaign.
  • This will be the 12 meetings between the nations. Finland are without a win thus far (D3 L8), succumbing to defeats on all but one of their six visits to Romania.
  • Six of the past seven Romania matches finished with Under 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score NO. All of Finland’s last five encounters went Under 2.5, though two of these would produce 1-1 scorelines.

The Bucharest factor also shouldn’t be dismissed. Romania boast an excellent record in front of their fans, winning five of the last nine (D1 L3). Meanwhile nobody has come to Romania and won by a margin of two clear goals since Sweden, who barely managed the feat with a 2-0 scoreline in November 2019. Finland are the form team, though, and appear to have enough going for them to claim the minimum of a draw.
