Romania Preview – Can Romania cope with step-up?
In the inaugural Nations League, Romania were placed in Group 4 of League C and finished a creditable second to group winners, Serbia, in a fairly competitive group that also included Montenegro and Lithuania.
To their credit, Romania remained unbeaten throughout the group stages and were perhaps a bit unlucky not to progress through to the knockout rounds, but they continued their momentum into the Euro qualifying campaign as they claimed 4th place in a strong Group F behind Spain, Sweden and Norway, and they’ll face Iceland in the play-off semi-finals in October.
On home soil, Romania have lost just twice in their last 11 matches in all competitions which were losses to Spain and Sweden, while previous encounters against Northern Ireland have seen Romania unbeaten in their last three meetings, winning two of these.
Northern Ireland Preview – Can N Ireland improve this time around?
Only a restructuring of this season’s Nations League saved Friday’s visitors from automatic relegation down to League C following their abject campaign in the inaugural competition last time out, as the Irish finished a very poor bottom of Group 3 with zero points to their name in a group that consisted of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Austria.
With respect, these opponents aren’t considered amongst Europe’s heavyweights yet Northern Ireland lost all four of their group matches on the trot, but they did raise their game in the subsequent Euro qualifiers as they finished in 3rd place in Group C behind Germany and Netherlands to claim a semi-final play-off tie with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
However, with just three away wins from their last 12 outings in all competitions on the road, along with failing to score in seven of these and losing 6-1 at Germany last time out, the Irish look to have their work cut out in Bucharest on Friday night.
