Rosenborg achieved their first objective in last week’s second qualifying round first leg in Ireland when they avoided defeat to Dundalk with a 1-1 draw, and they’ll be looking to press home their advantage on Wednesday night in the second leg at their Lerkendal Stadion.
The home side have been in solid form again in their domestic Norwegian Eliteserien division at the midway point of their campaign as they hold a five point lead at the top over second placed Sarpsborg, losing just once at home all season to date.
Rosenborg have won their last three home matches on the trot with wins over Stromsgodset, Sogndal and Sandefjord, and have won seven of their last nine at home in the Champions League. Strikers Vihjalmsson (7 goals), Jevtovic (7 goals) and Bendtner (6 goals) who has refound his goalscoring touch, should create plenty of chances this evening.
Onto Dundalk, and they’ve enjoyed a pretty successful campaign in the Irish Premier Division as they sit in second place with a Europa League spot now looking a certainty for next season as they hold a commanding 14-point lead over fourth placed Shamrock Rovers.
However, Dundalk are a massive 15 points behind league leaders Cork City who are well on their way to Champions League football for next season, so it’s now or never for Dundalk in this evening’s second leg tie at Rosenborg if they’re to taste further action at this level this season.
Their task has been made that much more difficult though following failure to get a lead on the Norwegian giants in last week’s first leg, and they’ll have to pull out all the stops to get a result here this evening I fancy.
