Rennes have a commanding two goal lead as they head to Norway to take on Rosenborg with the home team facing an uphill battle to reach the group stages of the Conference League.

Rosenborg Preview – Can Rosenborg mount a famous comeback and progress to the group stage?

There’s no doubt Rosenborg are up against it in this tie but last weekend’s defeat in France is their only loss in 11 games and they have actually won the other 10 in all competitions and scored 43 goals in the process. So we know they are used to winning games and also adept at finding the net. Of course this is a completely different standard of opposition than what they have faced but it should give them some hope.

Rosenborg currently sit third in the Norwegian top-flight and just five points behind current leaders Molde. Having been so dominant domestically they have not won the title since 2018 which ranks as a disappointment for the most successful team in Norway.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Monday 23 August)
On the European scene it’s been nothing but success until this playoff tie with Rennes. Age Hareide’s men saw off FH and Domzale with the minimum of fuss. The aggregate scores in those ties were 6-1 and 8-2 respectively. They know they are going to have to find at least a couple of goals if their European adventure for this season is to continue.
The man who will hope to provide those goals is Dino Islamovic. The Montenegro international striker has already scored four goals in this competition and notched seven goals in six games between July and the start of August.

Rennes Preview – Will Rennes start where they left off and show their superiority now they’re on on their travels?

The job is half done for Rennes and Bruno Genesio. The former Lyon head coach took charge in March this year and he’s used that period wisely as he bids to strengthen the club both domestically and in European competition. The club were in the group stages of the Champions League last season but were somewhat out their depth collecting just one point and that formed part of a frustrating season overall.

The start to this season has been steady without being excellent but they are unbeaten in four matches with two wins and two draws. They got their first league win of the campaign on Sunday with a 1-0 win at home to Nantes.

There is no shortage of exciting talent in this Rennes squad including Belgian youngster Jeremy Doku. The winger has been linked with a move away all summer but remains a big part of this squad. Eduardo Camavinga is another who could yet be playing his football elsewhere before the window closes.

One man who will definitely be at the club is left back Birger Meling. The Norwegian signed in the summer and will make an emotional return to a club he spent four years at and won two titles with.

Rosenborg vs Rennes Betting Advice

There was a notable difference in quality between these two teams last week and you wonder if Rosenborg can bridge that gap. Rennes have an abundance of quality – especially in forward areas – and the circumstances of the tie with the home team having to come out will suit the pace and power they have in attack.

The Norwegians can take confidence from their recent form, though, and know the way to goals themselves.

Key Facts – Rosenborg vs Rennes Betting Tip

  • The defeat to Rennes last week was Rosenborg’s first defeat in 11 matches
  • Rennes are unbeaten in their first four games of this season with two wins and two draws
  • The hosts have scored 10 goals in their previous two Conference League home games

I would be amazed if there were not a few goals in this but I fancy Rennes to complete the job with little fuss and take their place in the draw for the group stage.
