Russia v Czech Republic

Russia are favourites to go through from Group A and are facing arguably the weakest of their three group opponents, first. They come into the game in excellent spirit having won 3-0 against Italy last Friday and although it was their first win in three, they are on an incredible run of 14 games unbeaten. Dick Advocaat who tasted success with Zenit St Petersburg at club level before managing the national team has won things throughout his career and he has targeted success at this summer’s European Championships.

The Czech’s had to rely on the play-off’s to get through to the finals and are up against it heading into Friday’s game. Looking through their squad and it is packed with mediocrity who are performing well below the top level of European football. Their most impressive player in recent months has been their goalkeeper Petr Cech who comes into the tournament as a Champions League winner. Aside from Cech they look thin on the ground in genuine quality. Tomas Rosicky is their biggest name but he has been disappointing for both club and country over the last couple of years.

Russia look far stronger than their opponents on Friday and it will be a surprise if they are not good enough on the day to collect all three points and get their Championships off to a flying start.
