Russia v Greece Betting Tip Russia HT/FT – Saturday 16th June 2012

Russia v Greece

Russia were frustrated against a spirited Poland side on Tuesday and had to settle for a draw. They remain in a strong position to qualify considering they only need a point to guarantee and are playing against the weakest of the sides in Group A from what we have seen so far. The match on Tuesday highlighted that Russia are probably just a shade below the top level of teams in this competition due to their inability to control the tempo and take the sting out of the game. Despite taking the lead they were unable to close the game out and the end to end nature of the match suited their opponents for much of the 90 minutes. It was only the last 15 minutes when the pace of the game slowed down and both sides seemed to settle for a draw. Heading into Saturday’s match Dick Advocaat’s side will be confident of progression but they will also be aware they have to be a bit more disciplined and manage the game a lot better than they have so far.

Greece have endured two terrible first halves in this tournament to date and they have paid the price because of their slow starts. They were outplayed in the opening match of Euro 2012 when Poland came out the traps very quickly but hit back in the second half to earn a draw. Unfortunately for the Greeks, however, they weren’t so lucky on Tuesday as they conceded two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match and never recovered. Again they came back strong after the break but the damage was done and they come into Saturday’s game knowing that they have to win to stand any chance of making the quarter finals. If they are to stand any chance they need to improve their concentration from the outset and simply have to defend better. After watching them in the first couple of games at this tournament I don’t know if they are capable of doing that.

Russia have many options going forward and look a threat all over the pitch. Their front three are so flexible that it’s difficult to man mark any player whilst they are supported with great enthusiasm from the midfield three and their two full backs. They were far too good for the Czech’s and Greece couldn’t even manage to compete against them for the first 45.

Russia start games quickly whilst the Greeks seem willing to handicap themselves by going behind early on. Take Russia to be winning at half time and full time.
