Russia – History to repeat itself in final group game?

Having slumped to a 3-0 loss to Belgium in their opening match of the tournament, the onus was on Russia to go and win next time out against a Finland side with three points already on the board following their shock victory over Denmark. Aleksei Miranchuk’s sixth international, curled effortlessly into the far top corner, proved the difference in Saint Petersburg as Russia secured their first win of Euro 2020.

That win has them well placed to finish in the top-two in Group B, which would represent a minor upset considering Sunday’s opponents were expected to follow Belgium through to the latter stages. Victory over the Danes would guarantee a place in the Round of 16 for Stanislav Cherchesov and his team, though even a draw will suffice provided Finland don’t produce an unlikely win over the Belgians.

The omens are ominous, however. The National Team have lost their final group game in three of four prior major tournaments. That clean sheet against the Finns was also a rarity. Russia had conceded in 16 of 17 previous tournament matches, and therefore could find a win on Sunday is beyond them seeing as how they haven’t managed more than a single goal in each of their last five games (W2 D1 L2).

Denmark Win To Nil

Denmark – Unlucky Danes can still come good?

The Danes are facing early elimination from Euro 2020 square in the face after failing to acquire a single point from their opening two group games. Losing to Finland first time out was as unexpected as it was harsh, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg missing a late spot-kick to salvage a result from a contest they had dominated. A result that was compounded by the worrying scenes involving talisman Christian Eriksen.

An emotionally-charged Parken Stadium, the venue for their opener with Finland, then hosted the highest ranked side at these finals, Belgium. Despite Youssef Poulsen handing them the initiative with a goal inside two minutes, the Danes contrived to miss a number of presentable opportunities as they allowed their opponents back into the game, eventually succumbing to a 2-1 defeat.

At the time of writing, only four teams had posted a higher xG figure across their first two games at Euro 2020 than Denmark, scoring just once from 43 shots. And yet they have conceded three times from seven shots, underlining the harsh nature of their results thus far. Kasper Hjulmand will know his team must win on Sunday, but there is comfort in the fact his team have performed far better than results suggest.

Russia Vs Denmark Betting Advice

The importance of winning this final Group B encounter won’t be lost on either side, although Russia do have the added insurance of knowing a draw may still be enough to qualify. That same luxury is certainly not afford to Denmark who, after successive one-goal margin defeats, know they simply have to win to have any chance of climbing above both Finland and Russia into second place in the group.

Russia Vs Denmark – Key Facts:

  • Russia climbed into second place in Group B following their 1-0 win against Finland last time, which followed a 3-0 loss to Belgium.
  • Denmark are on the brink of early elimination after suffering slender defeats to both Finland (0-1) and Belgium (1-2), both at the same venue as Sunday’s encounter with Russia.
  • Of Denmark‘s previous 13 wins, all but one were were ‘to nil’. However, Russia have scored at least one goal in six of their past seven matches.

Despite their failure to acquire any points so far, the Danes are odds-on to collect all three here. Having seen both teams perform, it is easy to see why. Russia (0.6xGF, 1.05xGA) have looked very limited going forward yet remain extremely suspect defensively, whereas Denmark (1.75xGF, 0.6xGA) are doing plenty right aside from the most important aspect, which is putting the ball in the back of the net. However, I fully expect them to put that right here.
