Austrian Bundesliga champions, Red Bull Salzburg, will have first bite of the cherry in this third qualifying round in the Champions League when they have home advantage in this first leg against Croatian club, Rijeka.
Salzburg registered a comfortable 6-0 aggregate win over Maltese side Hibernians in the previous qualifying round by recording 3-0 wins in the home and away legs, and the hosts will be very keen to record another win in this round as they attempt to break a run of nine consecutive seasons without qualifying fro the group stages.
Salzburg romped to another title win on the domestic front at the end of last season by a massive 18-point margin over runners-up Austria Vienna, and they’ve made a good start to the new campaign with a 2-0 win at Wolfsberger.
Visitors Rijeka won their first ever domestic league title last season when they pipped Dinamo Zagreb by two points even though they lost to the runners-up 5-2 away from home on the last day of the season..
Rijeka, dubbed the Leicester City of Croatian football, also came through their second qualifying round of the Champions League in triumphant fashion when they thrashed Welsh side The New Saints 7-1 on aggregate, thanks to a 2-0 win at home, and then a 5-1 romp away in the second.
This is Rijeka’s first ever appearance in the Champions League, and although they came through the previous round with flying colours, they’ll be facing a whole different challenge in the shape of Salzburg here this evening.
