It may be the first game of 2022 but Cagliari know they have to start picking up points very soon otherwise they will be playing in the second tier. They travel to Sampdoria on Thursday.

Sampdoria Preview – Can Samp ease any concerns over a relegation battle with three points here?

Sampdoria are sitting lower in the table than they would have liked at the halfway stage but they do still have a comfortable cushion over the bottom three, despite only being 15th. Taking five points from their last three games before the winter break has helped that cause but Roberto D’Aversa knows they still have worked to do despite being nine points clear of arch rivals Genoa who occupy 18th as things stand.

D’Aversa’s men are one of four teams who have picked up more wins on their travels than they have at home so far this season. Samp have won just twice in their 10 games at home whilst picking up three wins on the road. They will be looking at this game against a struggle opponent as a chance to get parity in that record.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Wednesday 5 January )
The two home wins have come against Verona and Spezia – they have also lost five at home and have the joint second worst defensive record at home, conceding on average more than two goals a game. So there is an obvious problem in defence. That is apparent more recently, keeping just one clean sheet in their last 15 Serie A games.
At the other end it is the veteran duo of Antonio Candreva and Manolo Gabbiadini who lead the way. The duo have combined for 11 goals whilst Francesco Caputo has chipped in with four strikes.

Cagliari Preview – Are Cagliari capable of recording a first away win in 11 matches in Serie A?

It would have been a long Christmas for Cagliari. Only Salernitana sit below them in the table heading into the second half of the season. The experienced Walter Mazzarri took over in September and it has been a slog ever since. With just one win and 10 points all season, things are looking ominous for them and their six season stay in the Italian top-flight.

They are already six points adrift of fourth bottom Spezia and have to find improvement fast if they are to remain in touch over the coming weeks.

That solitary win, ironically enough, was against this opponent back in October – running out 3-1 winners. on target that day was top scorer and talisman Joao Pedro. The Brazillian scored two of his nine Serie A goals in that victory and has been the shining light of an otherwise brutal campaign. Incredibly, he is one of only five players in this squad who have scored in the league.

Away from home it has been even more of a struggle for Mazzarri and his players. The current coach is yet to win on the road with Cagliari whose last away win was back in May. They have lost six of their last 10.

Sampdoria vs Cagliari Betting Advice

Everyone associated with Cagliari will be hoping that the fact they have beaten only Sampdoria this season is a good omen but if they are to get three points from this game then it would buck a trend that is nearly a decade old. No away team has won in this fixture since Cagliari won at this stadium in October 2012.

Sampdoria will feel they have more than enough to steer clear of the bottom three but a win here would go a long way to making that more comfortable.

Key Facts –  Sampdoria vs Cagliari Betting Tip

  • Sampdoria have managed just two wins in their 10 home league matches this season
  • Cagliari’s last away win in Serie A was back in May – six defeats and four draws since
  • There has been no away win in this fixture since 2012 (18 matches)

It is hard to be confident of any team who have won only two of 10 home games but that is a lot more encouraging than Cagliari’s away record. It is as much a bet against the visitors as it is for the hosts but back Samp to do the business.
