Sampdoria could deal a huge blow to Genoa’s hopes for survival when the two old rivals meet on Thursday night as the Serie A enters it’s final few games.

Sampdoria Preview – Can inform Samp get one over their old rivals and continue climbing the table?

Claudio Ranieri was brought in to do a job back in October and that was to lead Sampdoria to safety. At the time he was appointed they were in the relegation zone and were struggling to find any sort of form. They were toiling. Now – with four games left – Sampdoria are nearing mid-table and they are one of the form teams in the division. Sunday’s 3-2 win away to Parma was Samp’s third straight victory in the league – something they haven’t done since the end of 2018.

There is still a viable chance that Ranieri can lead his team to a top 10 finish which would have been unimaginable even when football resumed in Italy last month.

The striking duo of Manolo Gabbiadini and the evergreen Fabio Quagliarella have been excellent and the biggest reason why Sampdoria have been able to move clear of relegation trouble. They have combined for 21 goals this season and scoring regularly in the last few weeks which has coincided with Sampdoria’s improvement.

Whilst those two are very experienced, it’s the emergence of Federico Bonazzoli which will be exciting Sampdoria’s supporters just now. The 23 year old has scored six for the season but four of them have come in the last three games. He could finally be living up to the promise he showed as a youth player.

Genoa Preview – Are Genoa set for a crucial victory that would go a long way to preserving their Serie A status?

Genoa’s recent form has not been as impressive. Their margin for error is nowhere near as big but they will be relatively content with their current positioning entering the final four games of the season. Saturday’s 2-1 win against fellow strugglers Lecce means they now hold a four point lead over that rival. That is a significant gap at this stage of the season.

Davide Nicola has been in charge since September and has done a steady if not spectacular job in that time. However, if he’s able to lead the club to another year in Serie A it will very much be mission accomplished.

There is still a lot of work to do for Nicola and his players, however. Derby games are never easy and they then host Inter before travelling to play an inform Sassuolo outfit. Genoa will then complete their season with a home game against Verona. All are big challenges and they will be required to take points from some of them.

Genoa’s last away game was a disappointing 3-0 loss against Torino but that was their first loss in seven games on the road. That will give them some confidence for his game.

Sampdoria vs Genoa Betting Advice

Derby games can bring out the best in players but this is a fixture that Genoa have been really poor in of late. They have not win any of their last seven against Sampdoria – losing five of them. It wouldn’t be a disaster if they take nothing from this game but it would certainly make things harder as they head into their final three games.

Key Facts – Sampdoria vs Genoa Betting Tip

  • Sampdoria have pulled away from the relegation zone following five wins in six matches
  • Genoa are four points above the bottom three after an important victory against Lecce
  • It’s seven games unbeaten in the Genovese derby for Sampdoria who have won five of them

There’s plenty to suggest there will be goals in this one. Both teams have scored in 10 of Sampdoria’s last 13 games whilst the same has happened in eight of Genoa’s last 10 games. With the attacking talent that the home team have along with the visitors really needing something then there should be plenty of threat from both sides.
