Georgian outfit, Samtredia, face a mountain to climb when they play host to Azerbaijan side Qarabag, in this second qualifying round second leg at their Stadioni Erosi Manjgaladze, with the hosts chasing down a 5-0 deficit.
Samtredia fell foul of Qarabag in the first leg in Azerbaijan and now find themselves a seemingly unassailable five goals down ahead of this return leg. They’ll now turn to their form on home turf which, during the Georgian domestic scene, ended up with an inconsistent looking 3-3-3 10/11 during the Erovnuli Liga season.
This is Samtredia’s first foray into Champions League football, and judging from their first leg result, they have a long way to go to keep up even up with teams such as their opponents, Qarabag.
Onto Qarabag, and they just need to avoid defeat in Georgia in Tuesday night’s second leg to progress through to the third qualifying round of the Champions League, having registered a convincing 5-0 landslide in the opening leg.
Qarabag finished top of the Azerbaijan Premyer Liga with an away record that finished up on 9-2-3 21/9, while on the road in the Champions League, they’ve recorded creditable draws at F91 Dudelange and Viktoria Plzen.
Qarabag have been around at this level for a while now, and they should have enough about them to register a second leg win here this evening against the more inexperienced Samtredia. Watch out for striker Ndlovu (10 goals) as a potential anytime goalscorer for the visitors.
