Third placed Santos will be keen to grab all three points in tonight’s Brazilian Serie A match against mid-table Fluminense, who have very little to play for as the domestic season approached the final straight.
A win tonight for the hosts would see them move within just a point of second placed Gremio, although they’ll still be nine points adrift of runaway Serie A league leaders, Corinthians, even if they do manage to achieve that this evening.
Anyway, Santos are almost guaranteed a top six finish which will earn them a Copa Libertadores spot, but they’ll want to maintain their recent solid form, following a sequence of nine matches unbeaten going into this clash. Look out for forward Copete (5 goals) for the home side.
Visitors Fluminense currently occupy a mid-table position in the Serie A, and perhaps rightly so, as they’ve been involved in the highest number of stalemates so far this season (along with Flamengo), with eight draws to their names.
With just two defeats from their last 12 matches overall, the visitors have done enough to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle, although they’re still not out of the woods yet as they are only four points above fourth from bottom club, Chapecoense, who occupy the last relegation spot.
Fluminense are also on a six match unbeaten run on their travel;s ahead of this encounter, which includes wins at bottom half clubs, Avai and Coritiba (and four draws), but they may not have enough firepower to hold Santos to a point here I fancy.
